Financial relief coming to help Canadians reduce risk from radon gas
Homeowners across the country have been asking for support to offset the cost of reducing radon in their homes. Finally, some provinces and regions are offering grants that help cover the costs of radon mitigation for families.
Radon gas can cause serious health problems in Canada.
Testing is important because radon is a colorless, odourless, tasteless gas, but testing is only the first step for prevention. The federal government recommends installing a radon mitigation system if a home tests above 200 Bq/m3. Radon mitigation systems are very effective at reducing radon levels.

The Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON) and its industry partners have released a comprehensive best practices guide as part of their ongoing commitment to continuous improvement. October starts fall from September high
October’s standalone monthly Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate (SAAR) of Canadian housing starts dipped to 267,055 units in October, a drop of 11 per cent from September’s high of 298,811 units, reports Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Looking at communities with populations over 10,000 residents, 21,100 starts were registered in October, a jump of 11 per cent over the 18,926 units started in October of 2021. Also rising, says CMHC was the national trend. This six-month moving average of SAAR housing starts helps present a clearer picture of upcoming new housing supply as it mutes some of the considerable swings that can happen with monthly estimates.

Report reveals construction industry’s carbon emissions reached an all-time high
A global report by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has found that despite an increase in investment and worldwide success in lowering the energy intensity of buildings, the sector’s total energy consumption and CO2 emissions increased in 2021 above pre-pandemic levels. The demand for energy by buildings increased by around 4 percent from 2020—the largest increase in the last 10 years. CO2 emissions from buildings operations have reached a record high of around 10 gigatons of CO2, around a 5 percent increase from 2020, and 2 percent higher than the earlier recorded peak in 2019.

U of T prof seeks higher-order construction robotics using AI
The use of robotics on construction sites has failed to reach its potential, claims a University of Toronto researcher, but with more research, Daeho Kim says, a higher-order fully autonomous mobile robot could be a step closer to realization.
Kim, an assistant professor in the U of T’s Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, says most current so-called robots that patrol construction sites should be more accurately referred to as tools that repeat some pre-programmed tasks.
