Earth day is two days away, and as part of our efforts during April to raise awareness on the importance of green building practices. We would like you to share what your company is doing to build sustainably, as we would love to profile your initiatives to inspire other TCA member companies to do the same.

Ford announces closing of non-essential construction

Ontario Premier Doug Ford today unveiled a series of escalations in COVID-19 shutdown measures across the province with the construction sector announced as limited to essential projects.

It was the third widespread shutdown of the sector since the pandemic hit the province a year ago, following restrictions in March 2020 and January 2021.

“The reality is there are a few options left,” Ford said.

Adjudicator outlines ‘culture change’ in system’s first 18 months

Ontario’s new Construction Act adjudication authority has seen just 60 case files so far but already definite trends have emerged, adjudicator Matt Ainsley told an online audience of construction lawyers recently.

example, lawyers had better write short, succinct briefs that stand on their own because there might not be any oral statements; the process is so quick that firms had better have their facts well documented and documents ready to submit; and “bully” behaviour won’t be supported.

Stack Modular and Bird Construction help secure an award for Iqaluit’s Inuit-owned hotel and conference centre

Stack Modular (Stack) and Bird Construction (Bird) are pleased to announce they have been recognized with a first-place award from the Modular Building Institute for “Permanent Modular Hotel Over 10,000 sq.ft.” for their work on the Aqsarniit Hotel and Conference Centre. The award-winning property is owned by the Qikiqtaaluk Business Development Corporation, a wholly Inuit-owned development corporation. This full-service energy-efficient hotel is 100 percent Inuit-owned and equipped with 94 rooms, a 5,000 sq.ft. (465-square-metre) conference centre, lounge, restaurant, gym, spa, and commercial space.

WSP appoints new member to executive leadership in Canada

Marie-Claude Dumas has been named president and CEO of WSP in Canada.

Dumas has served as global director, major projects and programs/executive market leader – Quebec and worked closely with the executive team since joining WSP in January 2020.

She is a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec and brings a proven track record as a global engineering and construction executive with over 20 years of multi-disciplinary management and consulting experience acquired with several multinationals, states a release issued by WSP.

Construction industry forecasted to need 300k more workers by 2030

Construction requirements across Canada are expected to rebound in 2021 in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and rise through the coming decade—albeit at more muted levels than in the past 10 years.

The strength and pace of recovery, however, will vary among provinces, and will depend significantly on the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, the recovery in consumer and business confidence, the global demand for Canadian exports, and the lifting of restrictions on international travel. This is according to the latest labour market forecast released by BuildForce Canada.

Cybersecurity threats for constructors the ‘second pandemic,’ says expert

As the adoption of new technology increases among general contractors and construction companies, so too do cybersecurity risks.

With the COVID-19 pandemic and the increased need to work remotely, cyber threats have grown exponentially in the last 18 months.

“What that did was increased the threat landscape of threat actors or malicious actors to benefit from,” said Ruby Rai, cyber practice leader, Canada with Marsh Canada. “If someone is using a remote connection which is not secure…what it does is it makes that organization a lot more vulnerable to being attacked.
