New plans revealed for Ontario Place redevelopment
The Government of Ontario and Therme Canada submitted a new development application for the revitalization of Ontario Place to the City of Toronto. The application includes detailed plans of Therme’s proposed development and marks an important milestone in the province’s plan to redevelop Ontario Place as a world-class year-round destination for all.
Therme Group was selected by the Government of Ontario through an international bidding competition held in 2019 and subsequently signed a long-term ground lease at Ontario Place.

McNaughton works out immigration deal with federal government
The Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON) is applauding provincial Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development Minister Monte McNaughton for working out a deal with the federal government to give the province more control over “economic immigration.”
RESCON has been calling on the federal government to substantially reform the system to allow more immigrants with construction skills to come into the country because more than 92,000 construction workers are expected to retire by 2030.

Ontario passes More Homes Built Faster Act
The More Homes Built Faster Act is now law in Ontario. The legislation, which received Royal Assent earlier this week, removes some development fees, raises the Non-Resident Speculation Tax rate, and provide most urban residential property owners a right to build up to three units on their land.
The government says the act was necessary to tackle the housing supply crisis and is critical to achieving its aim of having 1.5 million homes built in Ontario over the next 10 years.
The Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON) expressed its pleasure with the passing of the act.

YYZ’s runway accomplishes sustainability-minded transformation
During the rehabilitation of Runway 06L/24R at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), crews rebuilt the runway to extend its life, prioritizing environmental sustainability during construction to reduce GHG emissions, and furnished sustainability upgrades for a long-lasting impact. During repaving, the crews crushed and re-used concrete from the original runway, relied on an on-site concrete batch plant to shift reliance away from carbon-emitting transport trucks, and worked with only two 3.7-m (12-ft) paver machines to minimize construction-related carbon footprint.

Ontario increases long-term care construction funding
The Ontario government has announced it is increasing its construction funding subsidy to support the cost of developing or redeveloping a long-term care home.
The funding is meant to help fast-track the construction of new long-term care beds before Aug. 31, 2023.
Eligible projects that start construction by Aug. 31, 2023, will receive an additional construction subsidy of up to $35 per bed, per day for 25 years, states a release. In addition, eligible not-for-profit applicants will be able to convert up to $15 of the supplemental funding into a construction grant payable at the start of construction, to increase projects’ upfront equity and enable them to secure financing.

5 Steps to more effective workforce strategies
As 2023 quickly approaches, the construction industry is dealing with a series of odd contradictions. The after effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are signaling a looming recession with rising inflation, rising interest rates, lower consumer scores, dampening willingness and ability to purchase new home builds as the major indicators.
Seeing these trends rightly causes pessimism but construction might have something to be optimistic about in the coming year. For 2023, construction spending is projected to increase about 6 percent largely due to strong gains in manufacturing and retail facilities. The high rate of increase in manufacturing projects is chalked up to a trend in increased onshoring due to the supply chain disruptions over the last two years.
