The Texas School Counselor Association (TSCA), founded more than 50 year ago, is the longest continuously operating association dedicated to supporting and promoting professional school counselors. TSCA’s advocacy yielded great results during the recent Legislative Session when school counselors were included in salary increases, training on the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Program was added to principals continuing education, and districts are required to post notices when schools have full-time school counselors and nurses!
TSCA distributes close to $10,000 in annual scholarships to TSCA members as well as their students and families. TSCA’s Annual Human Rights Contest inspires and provides cash awards to the student artists across Texas. Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas (CREST)
Recognizing the outstanding work of school counselors, TSCA sponsors the Annual CREST Awards. CREST has been revised to simplify the application and better align it with the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs. Winners are recognized – with their administrators – at the TSCA Awards Banquet on Sunday, February 9, 2020.

Call for Reviewers for the Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research
The Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research (JPC), the official journal of the Texas Counseling Association, is currently accepting applications for positions on the journal editorial review board team. JPC is an indexed, semi-annual scholarly publication, aiming at providing clinical, theoretical, and empirical guidance to counselors, educators, researchers, and other mental health professionals. Qualifications include a graduate degree and licensure in a counseling field, a record of scholarly publications in peer-reviewed journals, and a commitment to providing prompt and comprehensive reviews of approximately 3-5 manuscripts annually. Becoming an editorial reviewer is a great way to: Impact and guide the profession, build your resume/CV, grow your name and brand in the counseling profession.
Individuals interested in applying are asked to include (a) a cover letter outlining their interest, relevant experience, and reasons for applying and (b) a current CV or resume.

Licensing Board Appointments
Interested in the influencing the rules that regulate your profession? The Governor appoints the members of the licensing boards for LPCs, LMFTs, SWs, Psychologists as well as the State Board for Educator Certification. Having an application on file may help expedite the appointment process.

LMFT Board - Continuing Education Requirements and CE Providers
The Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists (TSMEMFT) adopted rules, effective May 26, 2019, concerning Subchapter K, Continuing Education Requirements and continuing education providers. The current rules are available on the
Texas Secretary of State’s website. A courtesy copy of the rules is also available from the Board’s
Rules-Regulations web page.

Webinar from ACA: Marginality, Privilege, and Bias among African-American Women Counselor Leaders
The American Counseling Association (ACA) will be hosting a free webinar on August 22 from 6 - 7 pm (CST) that will will focus on African-American women in leadership. Participants will gain an understanding of AA Women counselor leader Privilege, gain knowledge on AA Women counselor leader Marginality and Bias experiences with colonization images, and learn ways to develop multidimensional images of AA Women Counselor Leaders Participants will receive specific resources of support for AA women Counselor Leaders.

Veteran Mental Health Department Invites Counselors Who Serve the SMVF Community to Suicide Training
The AS+K? About Suicide to Save a Life Training of Workshop Leaders is designed to equip participants to lead AS+K? Workshops in their communities and workplaces. This 8-hour training will be held in Round Rock on August 21 from 8:30 - 5 pm. Workshop Leaders will be equiped with the content, delivery protocols and workshop administration skills to successfully host a 2 to 4 -hour AS+K? workshop for adults who interact with youth or adults at risk for suicide. This training is provided free of charge if you are serving Texas the SMVF community.

DFPS publishes Foster Care Needs Assessment
The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) produces an annual foster care needs assessment in an effort to more strategically build foster care capacity in Texas. This new report provides a forecast for daily demand for substitute care through Fiscal Year 2021 and an estimated daily current supply, along with additional insights and information around capacity.
