TCA Annual Ski Day Recap
On Thursday, February 24, 2022, the Toronto Construction Association (TCA) held its annual ski day event at the Craigleith Ski Club. It was another step in the right direction of getting back to hosting our live events.

Proper COVID-19 protocols were in place and followed, but that did not diminish the vibe and excitement for all who attended.

Speaking of attendance, we had a remarkable turnout! Over 160 skiers, snowboarders, and social attendees made the trip to Blue Mountain to take part in the highest attended TCA Ski Day event in over 10 years!

A special thank you to each of the sponsoring companies – Home Depot, Bothwell-Accurate, Schindler Elevators, and Priestly Demolition for their generous support that helped elevate this event to greater than usual heights.

Having missed 2021’s Ski Day due to COVID-19 shutdowns the event felt rejuvenated and of course, experiencing perfect weather and ski conditions didn’t hurt either.

Moving forward, the TCA hopes to revive all its live events and if ski day was the barometer, then it promises to be an amazing year!

Thank you to everyone who participated. We cannot wait to host you all again in 2023 for another epic day on the slopes!
Thank you to our amazing sponsors for your continuous support

Building Construction – Putting It All Together
(Understanding a Project’s Life Cycle)

Every road that you drive on, every school that you attend, every office that you work in and every hospital that you receive care at was designed and built by the people in the construction industry.

Construction is a team effort with owners, contractors, architects, and subcontractors performing key functions throughout the lifecycle of a project. This workshop delivers a step-by-step review of the project lifecycle, from initiation through close-out, with specific attention to the unique roles and responsibilities of these stakeholders at each phase of the project.

Project Initiation → Design → Tendering → Pre-Construction → Construction → Project Closeout → Owner Occupancy.

Manual: Exclusive to this workshop is a comprehensive 350+ page manual that is used as a reference and guide throughout the sessions. The manual is based on accumulated knowledge and experience gathered over 40 years in the construction industry. It is a valuable and effective tool that will be your construction knowledge go-to.

Who Should Attend: This course is suitable for the newcomers to Canada who want to work in the construction industry as well as those who are transitioning into the construction industry. Also it’s suitable for subcontractors, general contractors, project managers/coordinators, superintendents, foremen, engineers, owners, municipalities, procurement professionals, operations and administration personnel in the construction industry.

This workshop is total 14 hours, and is worth 2 Gold Seal credits. Please click here for more information.

Project Bid Opportunities
Toronto Leaside Innovation Center (LIC)

The centre, which is to be constructed at 154 Wicksteed Avenue will incorporate a biophilic design – the practice of connecting people to nature within built environments. The top floor will include a 3,600-square-foot outdoor deck.

The height will also make it one of the first mass timber buildings taking advantage of recent changes in the Ontario Building Code, which allows taller heavy timber structures.

The property is owned by Peter Schultz, who is partnered on the project with developer Charles Goldsmith of the Beeches Development Inc.

The centre will feature cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor plates, glulam beams, and columns in a design that will weigh 25 per cent less than a traditional structure, requiring less concrete in the foundation and thus lowering the carbon footprint. The building will also boast a mechanical ventilation air supply treated with Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) and MERV 13 filters to improve indoor air quality and minimize airborne contaminants.

After more than five years of navigating the challenges and red tape that has become the building approval process in the City of Toronto, the stunning architectural design of the Class A building is nearing its final stage of approval by the City Council. If approved in May, Colliers and Lennard Commercial Real Estate will begin marketing and the new Leaside Innovation Centre should be the first mass timber flatiron building in Canada, opening its doors for business in 2024.

This project has an estimated value of $40 million
