Global NY Hosts Export Webinar Series

Empire State Development’s Global NY Division is hosting a six-part webinar series through the month of August. Each presentation features one of their foreign office representatives w ho share in-depth research on market trends and doing business in their respective countries, along with answering questions from attendees. Companies may also schedule one-on-one consultations with the representatives following the series.

Workforce by the #s in Tompkins County
|

- For the period between weeks ending 3/21 and 8/1, there have been 10,032 initial unemployment insurance claims in Tompkins County. Claims peaked at over 1,000 for a two-week period in late March/early April, but have since stabilized at approximately 200 per week. For the latest period, initial claims were down to the lowest level yet: 150.
- Retail sales, food preparation and service, nursing, and social and human services are the most in-demand jobs right now.

Accountants, auditors, and software developers are the most in-demand remote jobs.
- Overall, jobs are down 40% in June 2020 vs. February 2020.
- There are actually more jobs in retail (including cashiers, sales, and stockers), fast food, motor vehicle operation and repair, and medical and dental technicians in June 2020 vs. February 2020.

As of July 12th, new job postings for New York State* are still 29% below what they would have been if COVID-19 had never happened

Paycheck Protection Program Impacts in Tompkins County
The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) allowed many businesses to keep their doors open and retain employees throughout the initial shutdown. The program's application deadline was extended, but ended August 8th.TCAD evaluated the numbers made available from the U.S. Treasury in early July and found that more than 1,200 businesses in Tompkins County were approved for PPP loans with over 12,000 projected jobs to be retained. Childcare and Workforce
Closely linked with employment concerns are childcare concerns. Without reliable, safe, affordable, and accessible childcare, our workforce will struggle to return as the economy reopens. Recently Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul visited Downtown Ithaca Children's Center (DICC) to express their concern for the lack of childcare available in New York State and across the country and their support for a proposed $50 billion childcare spending bill as part of the next federal relief package.

New York State Supports Businesses Producing COVID-19 Supplies for In-state Needs

Governor Cuomo recently announced that 12 New York companies would produce COVID-19 related equipment and supplies to support in-state needs with assistance from New York State.
One of those companies, Rheonix, is located here in Tompkins County. Rheonix will receive $750,000 to produce 6,790 testing kits for New York State customers by the third quarter 2020, and net 53 new jobs. Rheonix focuses on molecular testing and pivoted product development to test for COVID-19 at the start of the pandemic, allowing for same day test results using their fully automated testing machine. Schools Can Open Across NYS
|
Governor Cuomo announced on August 7th that all schools in New York State are cleared to reopen this fall, but that he can revisit that decision if numbers begin to rise. Read more

NYS Most Responsible State in COVID-19 Fight

In a recent study, New York State was named the most responsible state in fighting COVID-19, with over 50% of adults wearing masks in public and high rates of testing. Read more

Coddington Road Community Center Moves Forward with Expansion Plans
Coddington Road Community Center received a $700,000 grant from the Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) to aid in their $3.7 million expansion project, which will expand and modernize their facilities, to increase child care and after school care capacity in close proximity to employment centers in the Town and City of Ithaca.
