Greetings from the Executive Director
|
|
Liebe TCGIS Gemeinschaft! / Dear TCGIS community,
I write today with a very special and urgent request. Mary-Fred Bausman-Watkins, who co-founded TCGIS in 2006 with Marcy Zachmeier-Ruh, is battling cancer and has just entered hospice. Chuck Bublitz, who succeeded Mary-Fred as the German teacher at Central High School, has set up this site as a place for TCGIS community members to share brief wishes, memories, or tributes. Even if this message is the first time you’ve heard Mary-Fred’s distinctive name, consider taking just a couple of minutes to share or to have your children share how TCGIS has impacted your life or to share a greeting, maybe auf Deutsch.
|
|
This past weekend Director of Facilities Andy Nesset and a few friends were able to give Mary-Fred a tour of the school, her first opportunity to see this beautifully remodeled and expanded space. When Mary-Fred and Marcy started TCGIS, they scoured second-hand sales to furnish classrooms, and, as one founding family shared, the whole staff could fit in a minivan, and losing even one student could threaten the school’s continuation. What remarkable growth this school has seen in 16 short years. I am so grateful to Mary-Fred and Marcy for the vision and dedication that led to this wonderful school community of 600 multi-lingual global citizens.

Danke schön, Mary-Fred, vom ganzen Herzen.

Masks-Optional Policy starts Monday, March 21
|
Last Friday the IRT sent this email message to all families and staff with an update to our masking policy at TCGIS. Our updated masking policy goes into effect next Monday, March 21.
As of March 21, students, staff, and visitors may choose to wear a mask at any time based on personal preference. All individual masking choices will be supported in all school spaces.
We encourage families to discuss the new policy with their students before the transition on March 21. From our community's response, we know masking will be a personal family or student decision. Talking to your students about respecting other individuals' choices will help our school and classes have a better transition on March 21.

Students in Sophie Rowe’s 4th grade class experimented with symmetry in creating their Faltschnitte (folding cuts), shown outside the door. Besides making beautiful decorations for the hall, students are learning about an important mathematical concept: symmetry. Mathematicians exploit symmetry in problem solving–to make calculations easier and to help them make predictions about a shape or a mathematical function. Frau Rowe is helping her students connect the disciplines of art and mathematics in a fun and hands-on way.

March 18-20: Submit your Lesemarathon minutes!
|
As our Lesemarathon comes to a close on Sunday, March 20th, please make sure your student(s) submit the minutes they've read to this Google form! If our students meet Frau Christensen's challenge and collectively read over 150,000 minutes, she has agreed to dress up like a mythological creature and visit classrooms during the day! And, the class with the most minutes in elementary school and of middle school will get a lunch party with her!
Prizes will also be awarded to the top three individuals in elementary and middle school, and every student who participates (tracking their minutes and turning them in on the Google form) will be entered to win a $10 gift card! All results will be announced on Friday, March 25th.

Hello TCGIS families!
We appreciate your patience as we continue to navigate changes in technology, and various information systems. Winter screening emails were intended to be delivered to all families school-wide during late February, including your child’s scores on various universal screening assessments. If you did not receive screening results for one or more of your children, please email Jessie Kember. We will ensure that the results are sent to you as soon as possible.

There are still spaces in camps for grades 3-6 in all weeks. Get your spots before they're gone!
We have a waitlist for two Camps for grades K-2 (Kunst in der Natur + Reise um die Welt) and could possibly add a second week for each of those Camps. We are considering adding these to week 5 (7/25-7/29) and Week 7 (8/8-8/12):
- Reise um die Welt (add to Week 5- 7/25-7/29)
- Kunst in der Natur (add to Week 7 - 8/8-8/12)
Please add your student's name HERE if you are interested in signing up for these camps. If we have 10 or more students, we will look into adding a second camp!
