Der Rundbrief
ISSUE 498 / May 12, 2022
Greetings from the Executive Director
Liebe TCGIS Gemeinschaft! / Dear TCGIS community,

Many of you will have seen the email sent earlier this week, but in this official school publication I want to express again my gratitude for the life and legacy of Mary-Fred Bausman-Wakins, co-founder of TCGIS, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 8.

At the March board meeting, we passed a resolution honoring Mary-Fred and naming the atrium after her. At that meeting we shared this short recruiting video from TCGIS's early days. Mary-Fred is the first friendly face you will see. We also shared this collection of tributes from students and staff whose lives have been touched by Mary-Fred.

I hope you’ll take the chance to enjoy these brief videos and reflect with thanks on Mary-Fred’s vision and commitment that laid the foundation for this remarkable educational endeavor and school community.

Herzlich
Kirsten
Incident Response Team (IRT)
The IRT tracks COVID cases in this dashboard which will be shared weekly.
(We have removed the quarantine numbers on the dashboard because we have moved to a test-to-stay program and only have students isolating.)
Update on Masking for May 12, 2022
We have had 21 new positive cases since last Thursday, May 5.  Due to our current COVID case count, TCGIS will continue to require in-school masking. We will return to optional masking after two weeks of fewer than 20 positive cases. Please send several masks with your student so they are able to change during the day in case the mask gets dirty, wet, or lost.
The current CDC Community Level for Ramsey County is Low. As we monitor the metro area, we note that the CDC Community Level for Hennepin County and Washington County changed to Medium in the past week.

We strongly recommend the following based on guidance from MDH:
  • N-95 or KN-95 masks for students.
  • Keep your students home if they are sick, even with minor symptoms.
  • Weekly PCR testing for all students. On-site testing takes place each Tuesday morning. If you wish to sign your student up for testing, please forward completed registration and parent consent forms to Dani Nicholson, Covid Testing Coordinator: dnicholson@tcgis.org.
  • If your student is ill on a Tuesday testing day, you may plan to do drive up testing by contacting Dani Nicholson (dnicholson@tcgis.org). She will provide you with detailed instructions. Your student needs to be registered or bring completed forms with them that day.
  • TCGIS will contact entire classes of a confirmed Covid-19 case within their class. Please test your students, several times if possible, if they were in contact with a positive covid case. Unvaccinated individuals will be required to mask and complete several tests over a 7 day period.
Testing Recommendations and Rapid Antigen Test Kits in Backpacks
Due to recent increases in cases at TCGIS and throughout the Metro, we are again sending rapid antigen test kits home with students today. We encourage you to use these over the weekend and/or prior to students returning to school on Monday. If you are unable to use the BD Veritor (app required test), please contact Monica Avery (mavery@tcgis.org).

If you are experiencing any symptoms, we strongly recommend a PCR/NAATs Covid-19 test in addition to testing with rapid antigen tests. If you are only using rapid antigen tests, we recommend serial testing. We have seen a number of positive cases take several days following the onset of symptoms before showing a positive test result. Serial testing is defined as administering a second test between 24-48 hours following a negative test. Each kit contains 2 tests.
Every home in MN is eligible to order 2 rapid antigen test kits for free (total 4 tests) through this website.
NEW Community Testing Site in Hamline Midway Neighborhood
As of Monday, May 16, the state will open a new testing site (not far from TCGIS), in the former Herberger’s at 1400 University Ave. West in St. Paul. Rapid Antigen testing will be available Sundays 11am-4pm and Mondays through Fridays 11am-6pm.
Herzlichen Dank to our Resilient Staff
We are fortunate for the resilience of our school staff who are going above and beyond to substitute for classrooms and cover duties for their colleagues through this recent surge. Our teachers also continue to support students who are learning from home due to isolations. Because they have taken on these additional responsibilities, we were able to keep our building open for all students. Please consider sending notes of gratitude to your students’ teachers and/or recognizing them through the Garden of Gratitude tribute (donations of any amount will result in paper flowers in the cafeteria garden).
COVID-19 Updates Available on IRT Webpage
In order to shorten the Rundbrief, we will prioritize new items for this newsletter and link to our Incident Response Team Updates webpage so you can reference past updates more efficiently.

20K by the 20th of May!
We have set ourselves a big goal for this coming week: raising 20k by 20th of May!

Next week is our big push for the Spring Campaign, a companion to our Give to the Max campaign in the fall. We hope every family will participate! Gifts of all sizes make a difference!

When you donate now, you also have the opportunity to celebrate teachers, staff, students, friends or family with a personalized paper flower that will be “planted” in our Garden of Gratitude on the cafeteria windows. We hope you will join us for this very special opportunity to support our great school and express gratitude for our amazing students and staff.

Watch for fun and easy ways to support the TCGIS Annual Fund next week!
May is Mental Health Awareness Month
We all face at one point in our life difficult and challenging times. Sometimes even many times. Life is full of ups and downs. We all at one point in our life deal with our physical health. We all do routine check-ups on our eyes and teeth and care for them. Sometimes we need glasses to support our eyes' function or/and not seldom we seek specialized treatment for our teeth so they can keep doing their job. We screen for cancer and other health issues so we can intervene early if something changes. Our brain is an amazing complex organ which needs care too to help us function well in everyday life. We all need to pay attention to our MENTAL HEALTH just like we pay attention to our physical health.
Check-out in this short video what mental health is. Then move on to Child Mind Institute's Campaign on "Dare to Share", encouraging us to speak up about our thoughts, feelings and mental health.
Partner with us. We have a school social worker, behavior interventionist and a school psychologist on the team who support TCGIS in their mission: Innovative Education of the WHOLE CHILD through German Immersion.
Spring Universal Screening
Spring universal screening is near! Spring universal screening will begin Monday, May 16th, and continue through Thursday, May 26th. We use screeners to identify those students who are on-track to meet grade-level standards in reading and math and those students who may need some additional support to keep them on-track to meet grade-level goals by the end of the school year. Meet some of our interventionists who are integral to conducting universal screening!).

Please also check out our universal screening resource: Screening FAQ

Please do not hesitate to reach out to Jessie Kember (jkember@tcgis.org) with any questions or concerns. We appreciate your flexibility and patience as we work together to systematically support our students to reach their full potential.

TCGIS Band Concert and 4th Grade Recruiting
The Spring Band Concert will take place Friday, May 20, 5-5:30pm. We will be on the playground, unless weather keeps us inside. Please bring your own chairs or blankets to sit on!

4th grade families, this is a great way to check out the band if you and your child are interested! Frau Johnson has a YouTube playlist with current and former band members talking about their instruments. It's a great way to see the different instruments she teaches.

Because of Covid we are not having an actual instrument tryout. If students are interested in trying instruments, please email Krista Johnson and we can arrange it!

There is more information on Krista's website. Click on the "TCGIS" link.
7th & 8th Grade Piñatas
We're planning to learn about and make Piñatas in 7th and 8th Grade Spanish at the end of the school year. I'd love to be able to have each student make their own piñata. I'm looking for materials! We'll need:
  • balloons
  • newspapers
  • flour
  • medium sized Tupperware (to mix and store the paper mâché)
  • paint brushes
  • colorful tissue paper
  • scissors
  • wet glue
  • string/yarn.
If you want to contribute, you can send any materials with your 7th or 8th grader to school between now and the third week of May. You can also drop materials off in the office, or in my classroom (room 304). We're planning to begin construction the last week of May, and continue the first week of June.
Thank you,
Frau Hammer
Donate or Lend: Set/Props for M.S. Class Plays

End-of-Year Picnic: Lunch Options
Vegetarian Lunch Option: Grilled Cheese Sandwich
In order to have an accurate count of how many vegetarian meals we have to order from Done Right Foods, please order from the following June menu in Boonli: "Lunch VEG ONLY: Picnic June 15".
Students who want the regular picnic option - as usual a hot dog on bun, do not need to order. Questions? Please contact us at ordering@tcgis.org.
Tell your friends and neighbors: Apply to TCGIS!
Did you know TCGIS still has room for more students in grades 5, 7, and 8 for next school year? Do your friends and neighbors know what your family loves about TCGIS?
If you're on social media, please share this Instagram post and/or this post on our Facebook page within your networks or parenting groups, and share what you love about this school and community.
Your genuine recommendation is the best marketing of all and helps grow our community and keep our school strong. Vielen Dank!

Raising Funds for Refugees in Germany
The GAI has launched the Communities for Ukraine fundraising campaign to support Ukrainian refugees who have fled to our adopted “sister cities” of Plonsk, Poland and Zell, Germany. Together with many partners in our community, we are raising $20,000 by May 21 to provide critical aid to refugees who need housing and immediate economic support. There are now more than 300 refugees in Zell and nearby villages, with more arriving daily. Funds will go directly to the town of Zell to help them house more refugees. Please donate here.
Get a head start on German for your Preschooler!
Kinderstube German Immersion Preschool is enrolling for fall at its Minneapolis location -- less than a 20 minute drive from TCGIS! We welcome younger siblings to join our preschool. Through daily play, music education, art and science exploration, as well as outdoor play time, Kinderstube students are exposed to all the concepts of early childhood education--while learning German! No language experience from the child or family is needed. Learn more about 2022-2023 enrollment here.
