Der Rundbrief
ISSUE 497 / May 5, 2022
Greetings from the Executive Director
Liebe TCGIS Gemeinschaft! / Dear TCGIS community,

If you and your family enjoyed the screening of The Tattooed Torah last week, I hope you will join us by Zoom this evening from 6:30-7:30 to learn more about Jewish life and culture with Jewish educator Heidi Schneider. Zoom link here.

April was Arab-American Heritage month, and our students engaged in a wide variety of related activities, including: exploring Arabic script and the math behind intricate Arabic geometric designs; identifying and making flags from Middle Eastern countries; reading Arab American authors; and hearing about Ramadan traditions from their Muslim classmates. We wish all of our Muslim community members a belated Eid Mubarak!

Germany is also a country enriched by many influences from Arabic cultures. The contemporary literary scene in Germany has been particularly enlivened by the voices of authors, poets, and journalists who write in Arabic and whose works are finding wider audiences through translation, as well as others who have written in German for decades, sharing their homelands, their refugee experiences, and their literary imagination with German readers. Let me know if you would like reading recommendations!

Herzlich
Kirsten
Incident Response Team (IRT)
The IRT tracks COVID cases in this dashboard which will be shared weekly.
(We have removed the quarantine numbers on the dashboard because we have moved to a test-to-stay program and only have students isolating.)
IRT Update for May 5, 2022
Please remember the following information as we see an increase in positive Covid-19 cases at TCGIS:
  1. We strongly recommend regular weekly testing for Covid-19, both PCR/NAAT and Rapid Antigen. We provide weekly onsite PCR/NAAT testing and encourage you to sign your students up if they have not already. Please forward completed registration and parent consent forms to Dani Nicholson, Covid Testing Coordinator: dnicholson@tcgis.org.
  2. Please consider regularly testing with rapid antigen tests at home as well.
  3. Keep your students home if they are sick, even with minor symptoms. In addition to a PCR test, we recommend serial testing with rapid antigen tests if your student has symptoms as we have seen a number of positive cases take several tests before showing a positive result.
  4. TCGIS will contact entire classes of a confirmed Covid-19 case within their class. Please test your students, several times if possible, if they were in contact with a positive covid case. Unvaccinated individuals will be required to mask and complete several tests over a 7 day period.
Update on Masking
We currently have had 17 new positive cases since last Thursday, April 28th. If this current trend continues, we would anticipate returning to optional masking after another full week with under 19 positive cases. You will be notified by email when our masking policy level changes.
COVID-19 Updates Available on IRT Webpage
In order to shorten the Rundbrief, we will prioritize new items for this newsletter and link to our Incident Response Team Updates webpage so you can reference past updates more efficiently.

Spring Universal Screening
Spring universal screening is near! Spring universal screening will begin Monday, May 16th, and continue through Thursday, May 26th. We use screeners to identify those students who are on-track to meet grade-level standards in reading and math and those students who may need some additional support to keep them on-track to meet grade-level goals by the end of the school year. Meet some of our interventionists who are integral to conducting universal screening!).

Please also check out our universal screening resource: Screening FAQ

Please do not hesitate to reach out to Jessie Kember (jkember@tcgis.org) with any questions or concerns. We appreciate your flexibility and patience as we work together to systematically support our students to reach their full potential.

7th & 8th Grade Piñatas
We're planning to learn about and make Piñatas in 7th and 8th Grade Spanish at the end of the school year. I'd love to be able to have each student make their own piñata. I'm looking for materials! We'll need:

  • newspapers
  • flour
  • medium sized Tupperware (to mix and store the paper mâché)
  • paint brushes
  • colorful tissue paper
  • scissors

If you want to contribute, you can send any materials with your 7th or 8th grader to school between now and the third week of May. You can also drop materials off in the office, or in my classroom (room 304). We're planning to begin construction the last week of May, and continue the first week of June.

Quatsch und die Nasenbärbande (Fiddlesticks) (2014) is about the average village of Bollersville—a town so average that it is perfect for consumer research. The adults of Bollersville will do anything to remain that way, including putting all the grandparents into an old folks home to keep their statistical average! In an attempt to avoid the same fate as their parents, Rieke, Max, Lene, Paul, Suse, and Ben team up with a Nasenbär (coati) named Quatsch to set a world record and prove that their town is anything but average!
82 minutes long. In German with English subtitles. Best for ages 4 to 9.
