ISSUE 636/October 23, 2025

Message from the Executive Director

Liebe TCGIS Gemeinschaft,

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. TCGIS participates in this endeavor by including important anti-bullying lessons in our classrooms and advisories, educating and providing resources to those students who feel they are being bullied. This week, TCGIS celebrated Unity Day on October 22nd by wearing orange to send a visible message of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.

Our elementary school students work through our Second Step curriculum’s bullying unit and our Middle School students tackle it by defining bullying and giving tools to students who experience it and what a bystander can do to help. All middle school students were also invited to participate in a bullying survey. Our teachers and administrators will use information from this survey to help address unkind and bullying behaviors at school. Later in the fall, we will also invite students to participate in a Belonging Survey, focusing more on how our students feel at school.

As an administration we take bullying very seriously. Reports of bullying that land on our desks are investigated and dealt with according to our bullying prohibition policy. On the school’s website you can find a bullying report form for students to use to report bullying. In every instance of bullying, there are bullies, victims, and bystanders. Your child could fall into any of these categories. The most important thing you can do is talk to your child about bullying. Teach him or her that it is unacceptable, and that all people should be treated kindly and respectfully. Also, teach your child that if he sees bullying or is being bullied he should tell you or another trusted adult- then you can work together on a plan to stop the bullying.

Together we can educate and empower our kids!

Safety Drills Coming Up

In accordance with Minnesota State Law, TCGIS is required to conduct a minimum of five lockdown drills, five fire drills, and one severe weather drill. We schedule these drills throughout the school year. We notify families in advance of our lockdown drills. Our first lockdown drill is on October 28th. The main message for students is to remain calm and quiet and follow the instructions of their classroom teachers. Procedures involve closing and locking classroom and entrance doors and moving children to the least visible areas in the room. Please reach out to your child(ren)’s classroom teacher if you have questions about the class’s drill procedures.

Opt-In Family Contact List

In order to facilitate communication between families such as playdates or birthdays we offer an opt-in family contact list by grade level. Eltern Kontakte (parent contacts, or EK's) for each grade maintain their lists and parents are welcome to add or edit their information throughout the school year. Parents are not obliged to share contact information at all, and if you choose to share your contact information, you may freely decide which details to include. Please enter only those contact details that you would like to share with other parents in your student's GRADE. Please complete this form one time for EACH child of yours at TCGIS. This will ensure that each of your children appear on their respective grade list.

Volunteer as an Elternkontakt (EK) this Year

Elternkontakte (parent contacts), or EKs, are parent volunteers who provide an additional communication channel between the teacher(s) and the parents in their child(ren)'s homeroom/grade. Each homeroom and grade-level have 1-3 EKs who work together to support the class or grade-level teachers, connect parents with each other and help strengthen our community. Managing the voluntary grade-level Family Contact List is also an important part of the EKs role. Much of this fun volunteer position can be done remotely since it primarily consists of communicating via email. If you're interested in volunteering as an EK this year, please fill out this brief form.
