ISSUE 51 / October 6, 2022
Liebe TCGIS Gemeinschaft! / Dear TCGIS community,
I am pleased to announce that TCGIS received a 2022 Innovation Award at last week’s annual meeting of the Minnesota Association of Charter Schools. We won in the category of “Creating different and innovative forms of measuring learning outcomes” for our German literacy assessments (or screeners) that were developed in-house. These assessments screen for German letter sound fluency (K-1) and German reading fluency (1st-5th) and are administered one-on-one three times a year.
The screeners help to distinguish whether a student is struggling with literacy more broadly or specifically with German as a second (or third) language. This distinction then allows staff to more easily identify which students need support and what the nature of that support should be. Because screeners happen throughout the year, needs can be identified on an ongoing basis, allowing for early intervention. Another innovative feature is that data have now been collected long enough to generate grade-level norms unique to TCGIS.
This is a critical part of our work that helps us fulfill every aspect of our mission of innovative education of the whole child through German immersion. Congratulations to the assessment team for the award and most of all for their ongoing important work in this area that benefits so many TCGIS students.
Herzlich
Kirsten

Message from Sport Teacher Frau Lydia
Sport class is off to a great start this year, but I am looking for help from TCGIS families. Right now we have a few students who come to class without athletic shoes, so here is my reminder to please send your child with their sport shoes to school. This way our students can safely participate in class.
Secondly, if your family has old shoes in decent shape, I'd love to collect any shoes that could fit a student from Kindergarten - 8th grade, so when a student forgets their shoes, they can still participate safely in class. I will take donations all year, if your child outgrows a pair later in the school year.
Thank you so much!

Allergies, Cold, or Covid-19? Test kits available upon request
We have reached that time of the year where allergies and colds are upon us and symptoms can be very similar to COVID. To stop outbreaks and protect students and staff we need your support to avoid the spread. Please keep your students home if they are not feeling well, even with minor symptoms. If your student doesn’t feel well in the morning, please monitor and rather send to school later in the school day.
We strongly recommend testing. If symptomatic please test several times with at home antigen test or use molecular tests like PCR and NAAT (find free testing sites). Please complete the form “Take home antigen test” if you would like us to send an antigen test home with your student.
Symptoms are:
- Fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher
- New cough or a cough that gets worse
- Difficulty/hard time breathing
- New loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Nasal congestion/stuffy or runny nose
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
