ISSUE 512 / September 22, 2022
Liebe TCGIS Gemeinschaft! / Dear TCGIS community,
I’m happy to highlight an upcoming event (details further down, as well) that is great fun for the whole family and features the creative work of our amazing Parent-Teacher Organization. Saturday, October 1, is the PTO Fun Run and Oktoberfest 5K at Como Park Pavilion. Sign-in begins at 11:00, and the Fun Run begins at 11:30 and is open to family members of all ages. (Walkers are welcome, too!) The 5K begins at noon, and winners can expect both very cool medals as well as Bavarian steins for celebrating their victory.
If you’re not a runner but would like to join in, come be a course marshal, help with registration, or just stand on the sidelines and cheer on the runners! It will be a festive atmosphere with music and food, so come join the fun! This event and others sponsored by the PTO support TCGIS teachers in a variety of ways throughout the year, so thanks for being part of their wonderful work by joining us on October 1!
Our intrepid cross country team will also be racing beginning at 9:00 am. Come cheer them on!
Herzlich
Kirsten

Día de los Muertos means Day of the Dead, and it is a Mexican & Guatemalan holiday that is centered around honoring and remembering one's ancestors. It takes place between October 31st and November 2nd. Starting the second week of October in Spanish class, the 8th graders will be creating ofrendas (offerings) in preparation for Day of the Dead. Each students each creates their own ofrenda using a shoebox to hold all of the items that make up their ofrenda. If you have any shoeboxes (or any box about the same size/shape of a shoebox) that you are willing to donate, you can send them with your student or drop them off in the office and tell them it is for Spanish class. We would also happily take any Elmers glue bottles you are willing to donate, tissue paper, or Day of the Dead-themed stickers or stamps you happen to find. This is a really fun project that helps our 8th graders have a deeper understanding of the practices and perspectives of our Spanish speaking neighbors in Mexico and Guatemala.

Fall Enrichment Activities: Oct. 3-Dec. 2
Fall session Enrichment Classes (AKA after-school activities) are starting soon! Enrichment Classes are activities offered by staff and members of our school’s community which run after school from 3:30-4:30pm. The Fall session runs from October 3rd to December 2nd; there will not be classes on no-school days (for example, teacher PD days, Fall/Thanksgiving break) and class prices are adjusted to reflect this. The price is $10/week paid in total at registration, and the total again subtracts weeks where a class will not meet due to no-school days. We have seven class offerings this session, and each has different student caps depending on the content and number of instructors. Registration is still available for these classes: Basteln, LEGO Club, und Länder und Flaggen aus aller Welt.
Read more about the classes here.
This year, registration will go through our Infinite Campus School Store. You will be able to view dates, locations, prices, and instructors for all classes. When the class is full, it will close automatically. The registration deadline is Wednesday, September 28th. Email amangan@tcgis.org with any questions!

Allergies, Cold, or Covid-19?
It is the season and symptoms are very similar. To stop outbreaks and protect students and staff we need your support to avoid the spread of COVID-19. Keep your students home if they are sick, even with minor symptoms . If your student doesn’t feel well in the morning, please monitor and rather send to school later in the school day.
We strongly recommend testing. Since we have seen a number of positive cases take several antigen tests before showing a positive result please test several times we recommend serial testing or molecule tests like PCR and NAAT (find free testing sites). Please let us know if you would like to pick up an antigen at home test from the front office.
Symptoms are:
- Fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher
- New cough or a cough that gets worse
- Difficulty/hard time breathing
- New loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Nasal congestion/stuffy or runny nose
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Muscle pain
- Extreme fatigue/feeling very tired
- Severe/very bad headache
- Chills
