New leadership in Texas City schools
Besides the new leaders at our La Marque schools for 2016-17, three schools in Texas City also have new principals.

Kohfeldt Elementary School
Matthew Salley is the new principal at Kohfeldt. He is beginning his 9th year in education. Mr. Salley taught elementary education for 5 years in Angleton ISD. The last three years he has been an assistant principal. He's joined TCISD in June. Mr. Salley takes over leadership from Sharon Williams, who requested to be the principal at La Marque Elementary School.

Northside Elementary School
Laura Haug joins TCSD as the new Northside Principal. She began her career in education as an elementary teacher in California 23 years ago. She has also served in a variety of leadership roles in Clear Creek ISD. She most recently was an assistant principal in La Porte ISD. Ms. Haug takes over leadership from Anne Anderson who moved to TCISD central administration as the Director of Instructional Programs.

Roosevelt-Wilson Elementary School
Wendy Patterson has spent her entire 20-year education in Texas City ISD. She is the new principal at Roosevelt-Wilson. Previously she taught 15 years at R-W (13 years in 1st grade and 2 years in 4th grade). For the past 5 years, she has been the assistant principal at Heights Elementary. Mrs. Patterson served as the interim principal at R-W this past spring when the retiring Jeff High moved to central office to help with the hiring process for the 2016-17 school year.

The new principals at La Marque Primary (Patti Martin), La Marque Elementary (Sharon Williams), La Marque Middle School (Dr. Flo Adkins) and La Marque High School (Ricky Nicholson) have all been featured in a previous newsletter.

Next week, we will feature our new assistant principals and central office administrators.
School bus safety tips
More than a million children and teens depend on buses to get them safely to and from the more than 9,000 Texas schools every day. They also depend on motorists to know the law and drive safely around school buses.

Texas School Bus Law
  • Stop for flashing red lights on a school bus, regardless of which direction you're headed.
  • Continue your trip once the bus has moved, the flashing lights stop flashing or the bus driver signals it's okay to pass.
  • Violations can lead to a $1,000 fine.
Safety Tips for Motorists
  • Obey the posted speed limit.
  • Fines double in school zones.
  • Keep an eye on children gathered at bus stops.
  • Watch for children who might dart across the street to catch the bus.
  • Do not use your cell phone in school zones.
Tips for Students
Respect your school bus driver and follow these rules:
  • Stand far back when you are waiting for the bus.
  • Sit still so the driver can pay attention to the road.
  • Look both ways if you have to cross the street after getting off the bus, or wait for the driver to signal it's safe to cross the street.

Final date to register before school is Friday
Any students new to Texas City ISD or returning students who have not registered already can do so through August 19 at your child's school. LMMS students can register at the former LMISD administration building at 1727 Bayou Road.

NOTE: Students who are not registered before the first day of school will not be admitted to class. On the first two days of school (August 22 & 23) students attending schools in Texas City will have to be registered at the Doyle Convention Center. Students attending school in La Marque will be registered at their school.

Requirements for registration include parent or guardian identification (current driver's license or photo identification) and two current proofs of residency for the parent/guardian such as homeownership or current signed lease listing student's name; a gas, electric, cable, or water bill from the last 30 days; food stamps or Medicaid verification sent to the residence.  New students should also bring a copy of the student's birth certificate; a copy of the student's social security card; immunization records.
Immunization requirements for 7th grade; appointments can be made at Teen Clinics
Immunizations are available by appointment only at all of the Teen Health Clinics open in Galveston County this summer. Immunizations can only be given to qualified individuals (18 or younger and either have Medicaid or have no insurance coverage). Call one of these clinics for an appointment: Texas City, 409-916-0720; Hitchcock, 409-316-6556; Galveston, 409-766-5750.

Please be advised that ALL students entering into 7th grade for the 2016-2017 school year must receive several state mandated immunizations prior to the start of school. All incoming 7th graders must have the following vaccines:
  • Tdap (one within the last 5 years)
  • 1 Meningitis
  • 1 Varicella
  • 2 Hepatitis A
Please be mindful that proof of vaccines must be received by the school nurse prior to registration for 7th grade. These should not be submitted with sports physicals to the Athletic Department.

You can deliver the immunization records to the Blocker or La Marque Middle School campus or by email. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your school nurse. Email Mrs. McCoy for Blocker. The LMMS nurse is to be announced.

La Marque Middle School Red Carpet Event
La Marque Middle School revealed their House System that is debuting this year. Similar to the Harry Potter series, students have been placed in houses to give them a sense of family. They will compete each 9 weeks for prizes and celebrations. They can earn points for a variety of things, many tied to academics.

As students arrived for the Red Carpet event held on Tuesday, they were greeted by teachers and staff. Each LMMS employee is also associated with one of four houses. They will wear their House shirts on Fridays.

Many academic strategies that will be incorporated this year are derived from training that LMMS administrators and TCISD curriculum staff attended at the renowned Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, Georgia. It's going to be an exciting year at La Marque Middle School.

Each school did their campus shout out. It ended with a presentation by Leslie Milder with Friends of Texas Public Schools. TCISD is partnering with the TCISD Foundation for the Future to implement the Friends' Ambassador Program in TCISD this year. The program is designed to unite campus and district staff around the organization's purpose and strengthen the culture of brotherhood among those who work in the schools.
