Dear Thornton Creek Families,
We hope you are having a wonderful summer so far! We wanted to touch base to suggest that families continue their advocacy for Thornton Creek and schools in our district.
Thank you to everyone who has written to the District and other local and state leaders in support of our kids and our schools. While the situation with SPS may seem quiet over the summer, it appears that things may move very quickly come fall. At the June 26 School Board meeting, SPS leaders indicated that a list of schools to be closed/consolidated will be shared in September. The final plan would be approved by the School Board before the winter break in December. That leaves limited time for SPS to meaningfully engage the community.
Many of you have reached out to us with your concerns about how the district is handling the situation at Thornton Creek. What we know so far: Principal Kischner is still on administrative leave, and there is no indication that any investigation that led to his removal has begun. The district has communicated to staff that they will under enroll us next year to 390 (we currently have 450) which means by deduction that no more students will be added from the waitlist (currently 80 kids for grades K-5 are on the list).
Since we have received no response to our multiple requests to meet with SPS leaders we see a real need to communicate with state legislators and OSPI. It is time to voice our concerns about our school, and very importantly how what is happening at our school is connected to system-wide issues with the District and the Board’s actions thus far.
We encourage you to continue your advocacy efforts to state leaders, and to make it easy, we’re sharing a letter-writing template for you to work from. You can find that linked here.
We here to support you. Please reach out if you have questions or concerns that we may support.
In community partnership,
