Doctor Gord Pyzer is kicking off our club 2019-20 meetings.

Gord Pyzer is widely regarded as Canada's most scientific angler. Known in fishing circles as Doctor Pyzer, he worked for 30 years as a senior manager with Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources before devoting all his energies to fishing. A member of the Canadian Angler Hall of Fame, the award-winning writer is also an internationally sought out speaker, tournament angler and field editor with In-Fisherman Magazine and Television.

We look forward to seeing you all on Thursday September 5th!

Did We See Summer Go By?

I don’t know about you all, but I was just getting ready for the summer season and now it is a week before Labor Day weekend. What the heck just happened?

Wow! I am excited for the start of the TCWU speaker season that begins in less than 2 week. I can’t wait to see all of my friends at the meeting on September 5. We are so happy to welcome Dr. Gord Pyzer to our first meeting of the new season and I hope everyone comes to enjoy the evening. Gord has an incredible wealth of fishing knowledge, this is a great opportunity to learn from the fishing master.

We hosted our Fraser House event last Saturday and I must say that I am so proud of our organization and thank everyone that volunteered for the day. This outing is such a great feel good event and I do encourage all of our members to join in for upcoming opportunities. Keep an eye on the website for future announcements! Please see the list of volunteers that were at the Fraser Outing in this newsletter. Thank you all!

Please be sure to send in your fishing pictures to the website e-mail or Facebook so Rusty can post your catch for all to see. It is always good to brag about fishing. Always good! Don’t be shy folks.

So sorry for the brevity but lots of stuff going on. I am really ready to kick off our Fall 2019 season and welcome all of my TCWU friends back after the summer lay off season. I’ll see you folks in less than 2 weeks.

High angling pressure, and catch rates combine to close Walleye fishing on Lake Mille Lacs

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will close Walleye fishing on Mille Lacs Lake Friday, Sept. 6, so state anglers do not exceed a safe walleye harvest level.

“We’re glad anglers had the opportunity to harvest walleye in May and fish for walleye through much of the open water season,” said Brad Parsons, fisheries chief for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. “Because angling pressure and walleye catch rates were high, the coming closure is necessary to stay within established limits.”

High angling pressure and catch rates in July and August when water temperatures were at their warmest increased hooking mortality, resulting in a larger-than-expected walleye kill. Hooking mortality, which is more likely as water temperatures warm, occurs when a fish is caught and returned to the water but dies anyway.

The state of Minnesota and Ojibwa tribal authorities with fishing rights on Mille Lacs agreed on a 2019 safe harvest level of 87,800 pounds for state anglers and 62,200 pounds for tribal fishing.

“Mille Lacs Lake walleye regulations allowed some harvest this year but it’s still important to proceed with caution to ensure continued recovery of the lake’s walleye,” Parsons said. “The restrictive regulations we enacted in previous years protected young walleye, allowing the population to increase to a number not observed since before 2007. Continuing to manage the Mille Lacs walleye fishery for recovery will allow us to provide good angling opportunities in the future.”

Starting Sept. 6 at 12:01 a.m., anglers will not be able to target walleye when fishing on Mille Lacs Lake. Anglers may fish for other species and use live bait.

Walleye regulations for the winter of 2019-2020 on Mille Lacs Lake will be announced in November after data from fall walleye assessments are available. Winter regulations become effective on Sunday, Dec. 1.

Fall Club Fishing Outing

We all get together one night a month to talk and learn about fishing. Now it’s time to put that knowledge to work.

We are very fortunate to have so many amazing lakes that provide great fishing opportunities within the Twin Cities Metro area. That made the task of selecting lakes for our Spring and Fall outings a difficult one. After discussion with the other members of the board, Dan Camp and Paul Johnson have come up with two lakes that will hopefully provide a fun day on the water and put a few fish in the boat.

The Fall outing is on September 14th on Cedar Lake in Wright County

Here are some fun facts about the lake:

It has a max depth of 108 feet.
According to recent gill and trap net data, it boasts a significant walleye population spread across several age classes.
It has a large population of northern pike as well.

We will have a morning start for each of these outings and Lunch will be provided.

If any of you have walkie talkies, please bring them with you so the boats can keep in touch out on the water. That way I can let you know when I boat a giant walleye!

We will be providing further details in future newsletters and at the monthly meetings. Mark your calendars, we look forward to seeing you all out on the water!

Fraser Group Home and TCWU Fishing Picnic

An amazing day for fishing and a picnic with our Fraser Fishing Buddies!

Fraser is an organization that supports individuals who have special needs and looks to create bright futures

Why is this event important and what is it that makes fishing so special?

Fishing is one of a few outdoor activity's that gives back in so many ways. Fishing creates some of our fondest memories, amazing life long friendships, gives us something to brag about, and the best pictures in the photo album are always fishing moments. Fishing connects us to our past, our parents, grand parents and so on. I can't think of anything better than going back and fishing in those favorite fishing holes that were handed down to us. Its so special that we plan for months in advance and count down the days. Its one of the few things we all look forward to doing.

TCWU hosted our third Fraser fishing picnic on August 17th, and what a Great Day! We had an awesome club turn out with over 15 volunteer's, friends and a special club member Miracle. There were 30 or 31 Fraser fishermen and fisherwomen, along with 9 or 10 staff members.

This event was really a big deal for our Fraser friends. It was cool to hear how they all were looking forward to fishing. They had a count down and they made sure to remind the Fraser Staff every week for weeks!

The weather was perfect and the fish were biting, and we nearly ran out of bait. Everyone had too much fun, and I bet we all would have fished all day no problem. Nothing better than topping the day off with Lisa Wood's picnic magic, with her Swedish Fish and some tasty Doc Dogs.

What else makes fishing so special? Smiles!

Over 50 people came together this Saturday morning and we all had so much fun. I would say everyone smiled at least 10 or 20 times each, which equates to well over 500 S miles!

Fishing is that one special activity that brings people of All Abilities together. Inclusion and social interaction are so important for everyone, it makes us all feel wanted, included, good inside. Fishing creates special smiles!
