Happy New Year
to all my TCWU Friends
As I sit writing this note I find it tough to find a place to begin. January has been quite eventful for the club and the month is flying by too quickly for sure. It has certainly been an unusual winter for us so far, but we do have great ice conditions for those of us that love to fish hard water.
I want to send a big thank you to our January meeting speaker, Tommy Skarlis. He brought a ton of great information for us and his energy and enthusiasm was sure fun to watch. Thanks Tommy!
I am still flying high over the successful ice fishing outing on Lake Independence last weekend. It was great to see so many of our members come out and spend a day on the ice together. Thanks to everyone that helped us set up base camp and pack up afterwards. We had a few hiccups during the day’s events, but we are still learning. Please let me know any suggestions or changes that would be helpful to plug in to future outings.
It was a nice surprise to have Steve Pennaz come out to demonstrate the Garmin electronics with some of our members. Pretty amazing technology for sure. I believe we received a video post from Steve that is on our Facebook and website showing some of the demonstration session. Rusty posted a link in the Club outing re-cap. Thanks again Steve!
Please send in any pictures of videos that you took during the outing or of any of your winter adventures and we will gladly share it with the membership. That is the beauty of our group. We are all in this together!
I am excited for the February 7th meeting. We will hear Robert Cardenas, one of our TCWU members. He promised to tell us every one of his super top-secret walleye hunting tips. Don’t miss this one, folks.
We have formed a committee to work on future club fishing outings and want to get input from our membership on potential lakes to target. Please come talk with us around 6:30-6:45 pm prior to the February meeting. Bring information about the lake you think we should fish (acreage, structure makeup, fish survey info, etc.). We want to plan at least 2 outings this summer and want everyone to have an input in choosing the venue. We hope to have these events planned by the May member meeting. I ask everyone, do your homework and we will see you at the next meeting.
I’m heading to the cabin this afternoon and hope to try out a new ice rod that Santa brought me for Christmas. I was pleased to see it is going to minus double digits temps…….Maybe I’ll build a fire and take a nap? Good luck on the ice and be safe everyone!

Our service men and women sacrifice greatly, affording us to live in the “Land of the Free”. However, often overlooked are the families that also pay a huge sacrifice while our service men and women are away from home. We have a unique opportunity to bring some joy to the military youth and pass along some knowledge and skill with respect to ice fishing and hopefully spark and solidify an interest in this great sport to the next generation. During the event kids will be able to fish and be recognized for fish caught with a weight in and certificate of species and weight caught. Merchandise will be given away at 2:00 for the participants and with games during the event. Ice skating is welcomed. (Skates not provided.)
All are welcome to participate and volunteers are in need. With at least 75 youth expected to be at this clinic plus their families, please consider participating and volunteering. Volunteer responsibilities are to help set up and provide basic instructions to the youth on ice fishing, and to establish a fun and safe atmosphere. If you have electronics it would be nice to have to keep the kids involved. Any shelter or supplies needing to be driven on the ice should be done prior to 10:30 with cars and trucks removed to delegated parking areas. However, snowmobiles and quads will be allowed and welcomed. You are welcome to fish once the event is over. MN DNR regulations apply for the event so all persons 16 years and older are required to have a MN fishing license if they plan to fish.
We are fortunate to have valuable partners in this clinic, including…
- Clam Corporation and the ICE Team
- Morries Automotive of Brooklyn Park - Mike Zickermann, Fleet Manager
- Wounded Warrior Project
- Urban Ice Anglers
- Dive Guys Big Fish & Fry
- Old Dutch, Hy-Vee, Cub Foods, Fresh Thyme, Vados Bait and Tackle

Tommy gave an amazing presentation. Unfortunately technical issues resulted in loosing our meeting re-cap notes. My apologies fishing club friends.

Club Outing on Lake Independence
|
|
Chip Leer kicked off our Hard Water Fishing season as our guest speaker in December. One of his comments was how much fun it is to gather with all your Fishing friends on the ice, "The More The Merrier" he commented. We took his advice and he was right on the spot.
For those of you who couldn't make it we had 40 members and friends turn out along with special appearance from Steve Pennaz. It was awesome to be out with the club members and socialize for the first part of the day. Many of us hung out at our base camp, ate lunch and formulated ice fishing plans. Some of the others were already reeling in fish, which was awesome! Weather was perfect and there wasn't a speck of snow on the ice, ice cleats were a must.
Steve Pennaz arrived with perfect timing to help coordinate some fishing hot spots and to demonstrate the Garmin Panoptix and LiveScope Sonar units. Amazing technology, we drilled a hole and did a 360 scan under the ice and BAM! there were the crappies 75 feet southwest of us. All it took to find the fish was to drill one hole, use the Panoptix and pace off 75 feet. This new tech quickly puts you on the fish and virtually eliminates the need for gas augers. The images these units illuminate were amazing, you could see an entire school of fish individually. Steve was able to do a live feed from his phone on social media, which was amazing and nerve racking as many of us made our first live appearance. Below find a link to the video and the Panoptix in action.

Below are some pictures of the outing. Please send in any pictures of videos that you took during the outing or of any of your winter adventures and we will gladly share it with the membership. That is the beauty of our group. We are all in this together!

Local Broadcast will air on:
FOX SPORTS NORTH at 11:00 am on Saturday February 2nd
Bob Jensen, founder of Fishing the Midwest, recently commented: “I’ve been doing fishing shows for somewhere around 35 years. We’re going to take a look at where Fishing the Midwest has been, and are going to share our plans for the future. We are going to take a special a trip down Memory Lane for our longtime followers."
Jensen continued, “The list of regionally and nationally known anglers that appear on this episode is crazy. We don’t think any fishing show has ever had more well-known fishing and sports personalities from fishing or the sports world than this episode will."
“I haven’t seen the final version of this episode, but if history is any indicator, our producer Brian Dellis will turn out a memorable final product. Brian and his team are responsible for the dozens of awards that we’ve won down through the years."
Fishing the Midwest is recognized as a leader in fishing education and entertainment in the field of outdoor communications. In addition to co-hosting Fishing the Midwest television, Mike Frisch is an outdoor writer, seminar speaker, fishing guide, and the founder of Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s School of Fish. Chef Ben's Wildlife Kitchen
|
|
Welcome to Chef Ben's wildlife kitchen. This month we are serving up Rusty's Lake Independence Chili. Not you traditional chili more of an Iron range vegetable chili. The vegetables especially the peppers add a natural sweetness, which eliminates the need for sugar. You may need to add a little but not much if any.
Bon Appétit!
Chef Ben
Lake Independence Chili
Ingredients:
- 3 lbs ground beef, pork or mixture of both. Can use a lb of Italian Sausage.
- 6 Ribs Celery large dice
- 1 1/2 Onion large dice
- 2 Orange Sweet peppers large dice
- 1 Large Jalapeno pepper Fine dice (Don't Saute add last to finished chili)
- 4 - 6 cans of beans, mix it up to your liking
- 1 large can Petite Diced tomatoes ( add a second small can if needed)
- 1 large can Crushed tomatoes
- 1 Chili starter kit (has Masa Flour to thicken sauce and spicy chili powder)
- 2 Teaspoons Mexican Oregano
- Salt to taste, Add Chili Powder, and Cumin if you need more flavor.
Directions:
1) Mix seasonings except for Mexican Oregano into meat and let set for 30 minutes before cooking.
2) Slowly cook meat, careful not to burn, add a little oil if using Venison as needed
3) Add tomatoes
4) Saute vegetables independently from each other add a little salt to bring out flavor. (Don't Saute diced Jalapeno's add last to finished chili)
5) Add Vegetables to Meat and Tomatoes
6) Add Beans (make sure to rinse unless they are spicy Chili Beans).
7) Add Jalapenos, Mexican Oregano and Masa Flour. Sugar to taste.
8) Cover and simmer for 20-30 minutes, stir up the bottom periodically.
This recipe makes a gallon and a half.
A little Science behind the recipe:
- Sauteing vegetables separately helps them retain their original flavors, which creates a cornucopia of flavors instead of one chili flavor if you cook everything at once.
- Mixing the seasoning into the meat gives the meat a chili flavor and knocks the bland meat flavor out of play.
