President's Letter
Hope you are enjoying the Summer and finding some fish to bite?

Wow what an unusual fishing season thus far, in Minnesota. The weather has been rainy,
low pressure all the time, and when everything is looking perfect here comes a massive bug hatch.

Our TCWU group has a lot going on these days. I want to send a big thank you out to all the volunteers who supported our Fraser Fishing Friends event. It was an amazing day and fun was had by all! We made lots of smiles come out, very cool. Special thanks to Josh Laabs for coordinating this event, great work Josh!

Our club outing on Lake Washington had a great turnout and was a lot of fun. Another one of those sunny days with a low pressure system made for tough fishing but it couldn't hold down the amazing Dan Camp who is just plain on fire. Congrats on catching and winning the biggest fish contest!

Our club is hosting a Happy Hour get together on Thursday July 18th at Able Seedhouse Brewery. Hope to see you all there for some brews and to swap some fishing stories. Our fishing friends Omnia fishing and Filson will be there co-hosting with us and of course Able Seedhouse Brewery. Thanks for the great partnerships we have built together!
Check out the details Rusty put together a little further down in the newsletter.

We are really getting some fun pics posted in the newsletter, I love it!
P lease send us pictures of your adventures so we can post to our members. This is a great way to share your catches and brag a bit.
Special shout out to Joe Roach on that nice stringer of Walleyes, that Brad Laabs caught for him, ha ha!

Have a great 4th of July and I look forward to seeing all my TCWU friends at Able Seedhouse on July 18th.

We are excited to announce another great line up of Guest Speakers for 2019/2020

Special thanks to club member, Past President and Guest Speaker Coordinator Joe Roach for pulling together another amazing list of speakers. Way to go Joe!
Avoid hitting loons during holiday boating and rest of the softwater season.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is reminding boaters to watch for loons .
Watercraft are a significant cause of loon mortality. Loons frequently nest and rear their young in areas where boats move at higher speeds.
Loon chicks are not able to fly until they are more than two months old; they’re also unable to dive for safety as mature loons and other birds can.
Mature loons are heavy birds, enabling them to dive as deep as 250 feet to search for food. They can stay underwater for up to five minutes.
Loons in Minnesota range throughout the busiest boating areas of the state, inhabiting lakes across almost all of northern, central and eastern Minnesota.
Other facts about loons:
  • Minnesota has more loons (roughly 12,000) than any other state except Alaska.
  • Loons can fly more than 75 miles per hour.
  • The red in the loon’s eye helps it to see under water.
  • Scientists think loons can live for 30 years or more.
DNR continues aggressive Invasive Species Management

A broadly-supported measure going into effect Monday, July 1, will significantly enhance aquatic invasive species prevention and management in Minnesota.
The increase in the aquatic invasive species watercraft surcharge on the three-year watercraft registration is increasing from $5 to $10.60. This is the first increase in the AIS registration surcharges since 1993. Watercraft owners will pay the increased fee when registering new watercraft, or when the registrations on existing watercraft come up for renewal.
Reducing the spread of aquatic invasive species is a major focus for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and its partners. The surcharge increase allows the DNR and its partners to manage existing AIS infestations, reduce the spread to new water bodies and help prevent the introduction of new species.
The increased fee will provide an increase of $880,000.00 per year for the DNR’s invasive species program for fiscal years 2020-21. This will allow the DNR to reinstate local AIS management grants, respond to new discoveries and continue to conduct AIS inspections.
The AIS surcharge increase was part of the budget package put forward by Gov. Walz and Lt. Gov. Flanagan. It was passed by the Minnesota Legislature as part of this year’s omnibus environment and natural resources bill.

How you can help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species?
  • Clean aquatic plants and animals from watercraft.
  • Drain all water by removing drain plugs and keep drain plugs out while transporting watercraft.
  • Dispose of unwanted bait in the trash.
Before moving to another water body, especially after leaving infested waters:
  • Spray your boat & trailer with high-pressure water.
  • Rinse with very hot water (120 degrees for at least two minutes or 140 degrees for at least 10 seconds).
  • Let your boat and trailer dry for at least five days.
Details about starry stonewort and other aquatic invasive species are available at mndnr.gov/ais .
