He has several top ten finishes in tournaments throughout his career and was indicated into the North Dakota Fishing Hall of Fame in 2016.

For those who missed the meeting you will find a recap of Jason's presentation, which includes ice safety, locating fish on early ice and other valuable insights, that are sure to broaden your fishing knowledge, enjoy!

Safety First
Many of us can’t wait for first Ice fishing, which is often the best fishing of the hard water season, but we all need to think safety as well.
Accident prevention is the goal and preparation is the key to everyone’s safety. It will take everything you have to reach safety if you fall in. Protecting yourself, family and friends from breaking through the ice is most important.

Jason encourages us all to be prepared, so you all can get out should an accident occur. A few of his key tips are:
  • Wear a float suit to keep you from dropping below the ice
  • Have ice picks strung around your neck to help give the grip needed to pull yourself out
  • Use a spud bar to check ice thickness. Take it slow and be cautious when venturing out on early ice
  • Go with a friend, keep your distance and carry a rope you can toss
  • Wear ice cleats! They give you traction to help get yourself or to pull a fishing partner out
  • More people get hurt falling on the ice, than falling through.

Early ice is not always easy, be smart and do your research.

Back in the day we used to go out to our favorite spot drill holes and wait for the fish to bite. Now we have Vexliar’s and Panoptics, which helps us at chasing and finding fish, but there is a lot of walking that comes with it. Everything takes longer and you need to prepare for it.

Be observant
  • Methane gas pockets can affect the ice on shallow ponds, be safe!
  • Be picky don’t go out in extreme cold
  • Ice can move around, be observant
Sometimes chasing fish isn’t always the best option.
  • Drilling holes and making noise on early ice will push the fish
  • Try going back to the old ways by setting up on a good spot and waiting for the fish to come to you
  • Remember to be quiet and be patient and you will have success.

Fishing Tips
  • Holes will let a lot of light through the ice. Fish will spook, sometimes they congregate away from the holes. Try turning down the lights or shading the holes
  • Don’t be afraid to fail! Take a chance or a risk other than the community hole that everyone goes too. Don’t worry about not catching fish and get out to explore new spots. That’s the secret sauce and it’s fun to figure out a new spot!
  • Fish wear the fish are
  • Big fish often rule the structure but sometimes little fish will push big fish off the best structure
  • Be versatile, get off the edge, and move away from the community spot. Have you ever seen fishing get better when people show up?
  • If you put in a hard day of work to find a good spot, keep it to yourself for a while and enjoy it. The moment you share others will come
  • Being at the right place at the right time beats the heck out of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Understand fish movement patterns and fish around those time periods

Jason, thank you for joining us with your busy schedule. We appreciate you sharing ice fishing strategy and fishing tips on how to prepare for early ice fishing success. We are all excited to try your techniques this winter.

Continued success to you and enjoy the Holidays!
