2016, what a year…

TDA Fly-in to Return in 2018
With a new administration coming to DC in 2017, there is increased demand for convention space next spring. This combined with a tight schedule of conflicting events has made securing hotel space during March or April really tough. And moving the event to May would bring the event squarely into the construction season and perhaps be a challenge for those involved with the 2017-2019 state budget process.
So TDA’s plan is to focus on state funding and the Just Fix It campaign in the first part of 2017, while we will begin planning the 2018 Fly-in. We will continue to monitor federal transportation issues and provide opportunities for members to provide input to our congressional delegation.

Turnout for Transportation One night, 70 community forums
Thanks to all who participated in this first-of-its-kind event. And a special thanks to our local partners: the League of Wisconsin Municipalities, the Wisconsin Counties Association and the Wisconsin Towns Association.
Pulling together an event of this size took a significant amount of work and collaboration.
But the results were well worth the effort:
- Thousands of local officials, business people and members of the public gathered on September 29th to discuss critical projects and services in each region and the need for the state to find a sustainable solution to Wisconsin’s transportation challenge.
- There were over 75 press hits around the state, ranging from TV coverage in larger markets to stories in local weekly newspapers.
- We also made a splash on social media with more than 400 tweets during the event, potentially reaching 60,000 plus people.
The goal was to put the spotlight on transportation, and together, we exceeded expectations.
Please plan to attend the TDA Annual Meeting on November 15th to help g
row the momentum

New Jersey 17th State to Increase Transportation Revenue Since 2013
Governor Christie has signed legislation to increase the state’s gas tax by 23 cents per gallon and the diesel tax by 27 cents per gallon. The measure ends a three-month shutdown of all non-emergency work and will generate an additional $16 billion in transportation funding over the next eight years.
To make the measure acceptable to Governor Christie, who said he wouldn’t approve a gas tax increase without tax breaks elsewhere, the package includes the elimination of New Jersey’s estate tax, a reduction in the state’s 7 percent sales tax to 6.6 percent by 2018 and other tax cuts.
Critics of the bill are concerned the tax offsets will put too much pressure on the state’s general fund. Moody’s Investor Service agrees, stating in a release, "The net effect of the revenue package is credit negative because it will strain the state’s operating budget amid rapidly rising pension contributions and below-average revenue growth."

Congress Passes a Continuing Resolution, Extends Federal Funding
Congress succeeded in passing a continuing resolution Sept. 28 that headed off a potential government shutdown and funds transportation programs and most federal agencies at prior-year levels through Dec. 9.
The CR passage, first in the Senate and then in the House, meant lawmakers could leave as scheduled at month's end without having a funding crisis when the new federal budget year begins Oct. 1.
But it also meant state departments of transportation and transit agencies around the country now face a delay of at least two months in receiving the scheduled Oct. 1 funding increases Congress already authorized and paid for through last year's Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act. read more of the AASHTO post
