Technology and Distance Learning Symposium 2021 Call for Proposals is Now Open

Plans are underway for OTAN's Technology and Distance Learning Symposium (TDLS) 2021, scheduled for Wednesday, March 3 through Friday, March 5. This year, TDLS is going virtual and it's free to attend!

The call for proposals has opened! You are invited to present and share your promising practices, strategies, lesson plans, and other resources related to technology integration and distance/blended learning in your programs with your adult education colleagues. The call for proposals is open until Friday, January 15, 2021.

OTAN is looking for presentations that highlight technology, how it enhances the learner experience, extends the classroom to learners, and how technology integration helps adult education programs be more effective and efficient. Credit for Prior Learning: Leveraging Past Learning to Close Present-Day Equity Gaps

In a research brief, California Competes, addresses the need for the state to create equitable pathways to and through postsecondary education for Californians, particularly people of color. Without equitable pathways to and through postsecondary education, California faces labor shortages that could threaten the state’s position as the fifth largest economy in the world. Key takeaways from this research brief include:

Inconsistent credit for prior learning (CPL) policies stunt students’ access to postsecondary education and potential success.
Hundreds of thousands of students who could benefit from CPL are not veterans.
Expanding CPL polices could increase Black adult enrollment by nearly 50 percent.

Hanover Research: Best Practices in Developmental Education

In the following report, Hanover Research presents their findings for best practices and effective strategies for developmental education. Key findings include:

Employ a multiple measures approach to placing students in developmental education.

Offer compressed courses and use alternative delivery modalities for developmental courses.

Offer multiple math pathways that align with the academic needs of different groups of students.

Develop out-of-class support services specifically for developmental education students.

PPIC: Californians’ Outlook Is Bleak as Low-Income Families Struggle

PPIC has been closely tracking how the pandemic and recession are affecting Californians’ well-being as part of informing the design and implementation of policies that foster an equitable recovery. In the latest blog post by the PPIC, the December statewide survey finds four in ten Californians report having their work hours or pay reduced, one in four say they have cut back on food, and one in five say they have been unable to pay a monthly bill. Even if you did not originally register to attend the Summit, you still have access to all of the amazing sessions (recordings and materials). Register on the CAEP Summit 2020 landing page and access now!

Using your login for vFAIRS, you can access all recordings and materials until the end of January 2021! Through the ‘Auditorium’, access the agenda, then all sessions by program strand. Materials are available in the 'Resources' section and available to add to your 'Swag Bag' and email for future reference.

Advancing Equity Professional Learning Series - Archived Materials

In November and December 2020, CAEP TAP hosted a three-part Advancing Equity Professional Learning series, Implicit Bias, Strategies for Talking About Race in the Classroom and Action Steps for Teachers and Programs for Addressing Racial Equity, in collaboration with Cynthia Peters, World Education and Riva Pearson, Jewish Vocational Service. The series provided thought-provoking sessions with the goal of engaging in open dialogue and presenting strategies to advance equity in adult education. Each interactive session built upon one another. Attendees enjoyed the sessions, found the presenters to be very knowledgeable, open and focused, and appreciated hearing other practitioners experience identifying bias within themselves and at their school site and practices that could be easily implemented.
