Enslaved: Peoples of the Historical Slave Trade

Please join us for an online presentation by associate professor of history, Dr. Daryle Williams.
Williams will speak on "Enslaved: Peoples of the Historical Slave Trade" ( Enslaved.org), an open-source, open-access online publishing platform and discovery tool for exploring the lives of the enslaved. Launched publicly on December 1, 2020, Enslaved.org is using linked-open data to piece together the fragmented lives of 600,000 (and growing) people named across dozens of datasets and millions of data points. Joined by Marisol Fila (doctoral candidate, Romance Languages, University of Michigan), Williams will provide an overview of the project and then show some of the work that goes on #behindthedata. Rebels and Revels: A Virtual Symposium on the Theatre of the Middle East

"Rebels and Revels: A Virtual Symposium on the Theatre of the Middle East" is a public humanities event that explores through scholarship and performance how theatre in the Middle East is shaped in its diaspora, and how the artists navigate Middle Eastern theatre history in their creative processes.

Inauguration of Darryll J. Pines

Celebrate the installation of Dr. Darryll J. Pines as the 34th President of the University of Maryland with a week of events showcasing the University of Maryland’s greatness.
TDPS and the arts will be strongly represented throughout the week!
- Monday, April 19, 5PM: "The Art of Humanizing Grand Challenges." A moderated panel of arts and humanities experts provide insights on some of today’s Grand Challenges from a historical, cultural and artistic perspective.
- Tuesday, April 20, 7PM: "The Life and Legacy of David C. Driskell." President Pines joins Driskell Center Director Curlee Holton to reflect on the life and legacy of the late artist, scholar, curator and distinguished university professor emeritus.
- Thursday, April 22, 7PM: "Moving Maryland Forward: A Celebration of the Inauguration of Darryll J. Pines." This evening celebration features a series of Grand Challenges lightning talks, performances and remarks from special guests, including President Pines. This event will include a feature on the TDPS collaboration, "Subject to Change."

Henson Awards Showcase

The talented student recipients of the Jim Henson Fund for Puppetry will perform/present their funded projects. The recipients are: Christina Robson, Bill Kassay, Tristan Koepke, and Channing Tucker.
The School of Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies hosts an annual competition and recipients are awarded funds to create a puppet project or performance. The Jim Henson Fund for Puppetry was established by Jane Henson '55 to honor the memory of Jim Henson '60, creator of the world famous Muppets.

In this varied, vibrant and celebratory dance presentation, the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies offers new works of art in motion. The performance consists of a selection of undergraduate and graduate dance student choreography and works by artist-in-residence Marielis Wentworth Garcia and guest choreographer Chuck Wilt, artistic director of UNA Productions based on the west coast.

MFA Design Portfolio Review

At the end of each academic year, our MFA Design candidates present their design portfolios for review by faculty and local design professionals. This year, the portfolio review will take place on Zoom. Design portfolios include studio projects as well as fully realized academic and professional scenic, costume, lighting or projection designs.

- Dance faculty Crystal U. Davis was a movement consultant on a PBS POV short documentary called Integrate.Me. With an intentional eye to inclusion of all bodies and abilities, she developed the guided movement activity in the supplemental interactive IG activities tied to the project, leading in the direction of images for the IG movement activity, and voicing the guided movement activity. - Playwright, teaching artist, and TDPS alum Mariel Eve Berlin-Fischler (BA Theatre '14) is currently competing with her new full-length play Part in the Jewish Plays Project's 10th annual writing competition. The Jewish Plays Project has a mission to bring contemporary Jewish conversations to the stage and to add new and current Jewish plays and musicals to the landscape of theatrical work presented to Jewish and non-Jewish audiences alike. The JPP’s innovative and competitive development vehicle invests emerging artists in their Jewish identity; engages Jewish communities in the vetting, selecting and championing of new voices; and secures mainstream production opportunities for the best new plays. Berlin-Fischler's Part has tied for first place in Hartford's regional competition, and has, thus far, also been selected as a competing top 3 finalist for the upcoming Midwestern Regional Competition, hosted in Chicago. You can place your vote for your favorite of all ten national finalists online, this coming June. Congrats, Mariel!
- TDPS alum Marcia Pendelton, president and founder of Walk Tall Girl Productions, is producing and hosting a new radio program, “Backstage Stories." The program offers a behind-the-scenes look at arts, culture, and entertainment through in-depth conversations with diverse voices from the global community. - MFA in Dance alums Allen Xing and Colette Krogol were selected as Baker Artist Awardees for the 2021 cycle. Congrats!

NEW Camp Rim Rock, an all-girls overnight summer camp located in West Virginia, is hiring Performing Arts staff for Summer 2021. They are seeking camp counselors who have an outgoing personality, a good sense of humor, strong teaching skills in your activity area, good leadership ability, and experience in supervising and instructing children. Campers range in ages from 6 to 15, and all age groups work towards a short performance at the end of a two-week session. Studio Theatre has opened applications for next year's apprenticeship program. As a respected midsized theatre, Studio is both ambitious enough to provide invigorating programming and small enough to allow its apprentices unique access to the theatre’s artistic and administrative leadership. The work is rigorous and rewarding; apprentices have a full schedule, and work together with the staff to meet the demanding deadlines of the field. Night and weekend hours are sometimes required.
