TECNA Digest - October 2019

TECNA Board Chair Message
|
Over the past year, the TECNA discussion streams at our events have added a focus on diversity and inclusion to the broader spectrum of issues around tech talent. Last week I attended a conference in Halifax called Innovate Atlantic, organized by TECNA member Volta. One of the breakout sessions looked at aspects of the D&I issue including the role of leadership, not just in ensuring real progress on D&I but also in managing critical workplace and HR changes driven by today's wave of automation. Panel speaker Victoria Pelletier wrote recently "...the shape of leadership may be encountering its own change right now. It appears that a rapidly evolving AI landscape demands human leadership versed in the soft skills that motivate, guide and support the well-being of workers."
While diversity and inclusion, and the leadership needed to continue to make real progress, must remain integral to the tech talent agenda and discourse, the future of work in North America is bringing with it a host of challenges and changes to occupations and labor markets, employers, and communities. These changes, along with our demographic realities, will inevitably influence the work we do around talent and workforce development, but will also play a role in our own staff recruitment and retention, as well as the value proposition we can offer our members.
