The latest on innovation and entrepreneurship in Maryland

Alirtify, founded by Kwabena Okrah and based in Frederick, Md., is an artificial intelligence platform that uses data from news events such as sentiments, location, and key words to glean real-time insights. Alirtify uses news data as well as social media, blogs, and other publicly available data to reduce the noise and only share what is important to the user. The key is geo-tagging contacts in the user’s connections from various platforms to news and social media within 60 miles radius of those contacts.

The partnership between the state government and five research institutions provides funding support and business guidance for new products and companies.

The PioneerBaltimore program is an initiative of the ETC (Emerging Technology Centers), Baltimore’s award-winning incubator. This program is specifically designed to help you take your early-stage business idea to the next step. Whether that is developing a business plan or working on a prototype, the ETC wants to help early-stage entrepreneurs like you get access to the guidance, the resources, and the network you need to turn your business dream into a reality.

Application Deadline: Sunday, August 28, 2022, at 11:59 pm

Ashley Williams, founder and CEO of Clymb, knows students and their struggles. In her prior role as director of climate and culture at Southwest Baltimore Charter School, Williams developed emotional intelligence and mindfulness curriculum. While she valued the work, Williams found it an impossible task for one person to manage the emotional well-being of 400 students—which is where Clymb comes in.

News Spotlights

The past two years have seen an increase in commitments related to diversity, equity and inclusion, but for some organizations, that’s long been a focus area.

Supporters of local tech communities like universities, law firms, accelerators, coding bootcamps and corporate partners have often recognized that entrepreneurs and technologists from underrepresented backgrounds need additional resources and assistance. A renewed push for social justice since 2020 has resulted in expanding those efforts. There are many different types of programs and initiatives directed at this cause, and there is still much work to be done to close the racial equity gap, but these organizations support a foundation upon which a thriving and inclusive ecosystem can be built.

A Baltimore materials company won a $2.7 million U.S. Department of Energy grant to create a new style of ceramic packaging for electronics, an innovation that is designed to improve the performance of electric vehicles and aircraft.

Synteris uses 3D printing to create uniquely shaped ceramic packaging for power electronic modules, the devices used to transfer energy from a battery to something like an electric motor for a car. The company plans to use the grant for research and development, such as mechanical testing to showcase the viability of its ceramics, Chief Technology Officer Adam Peters said. The high cost of equipment has been a constant difficulty for the young company, he said.

The Maryland Marketing Partnership, created by Governor Larry Hogan in 2016 to help drive Maryland’s branding and marketing efforts to attract businesses, create jobs, and grow the state’s economy, today shared a summary of the latest news from companies and organizations that are part of the partnership.

Join TEDCO's CEO, Troy LeMaile-Stovall, in thought-provoking conversations with regional leaders about the future of Maryland’s innovation ecosystem.
