Private Sector Council of Saint Lucia supports Vaccination Workplace Policy

The Saint Lucia Private Sector Council (PSC) held an urgent meeting of members last week to discuss growing private sector support for workforce vaccination policies. The Meeting was attended by representatives of the St. Lucia Chamber of Commerce Industry and Agriculture, St. Lucia Manufacturers Association, St. Lucia Employers Federation, Saint Lucia Hospitality and Tourism Association, and the Bankers Association of St. Lucia.

This meeting followed months of discussions with small, medium, and large-scale members and entrepreneurs requesting guidance on this issue. The support by businesses for workplace vaccination policies has been revealed through multiple surveys conducted among the members of the Chamber of Commerce and the Saint Lucia Hospitality and Tourism Association. It comes at a time when repeated waves of the COVID-19 infections have placed a stranglehold on local, regional, and global economies bringing many to a near stand-still...Read More
WHERE ARE THEY NOW
Shariana Lewis: Front and Centre

For Shariana Lewis, the primary reason for her foray into the tourism industry 13 years ago stemmed from the need for gainful employment. Over the years, however, she realized that the job she took did not only solve a financial problem, but also a personal one. Through perseverance and doses of encouragement from her manager, the self-described former introvert is now front and centre, brimming with confidence.

After graduating from Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School in 2004, Lewis migrated to Canada where she spent four years. In 2008, she returned to Saint Lucia and soon began the uphill task of finding gainful employment.
“I walked into Bay Gardens Beach Resort & Spa, seeking employment,” she said. “I met Miss Cheryl Gustave, who was the Front Desk Manager at the time. She interviewed me and hired me on the spot and I was told to start work two days later.”

Lewis started her new job two days later as a concierge and had a desk in the lobby. Her roles included meeting and greeting the guests, mingling with them at the Manager’s Cocktail, booking events for them, and ensuring that they were happy and enjoyed their stay.

Starting out on the job was a bit uneasy, she said. She was both shy and new to the tourism industry. She recalled sitting at her desk on many days feeling like a fish out of water. However, her boss and others from her team encouraged her to mingle, make eye contact with people, and be enthusiastic...Read More

Valley of the FREE ~ Mountain of the Gods

Soufriere, Saint Lucia
by Kirk Elliott

The Pitons of Saint Lucia are one of the most iconic landmarks of the Caribbean. So majestic are they that in 2004 UNESCO inscribed them as a World Heritage Site for their “Outstanding Universal Value.” But the historical appeal of these mountains goes back hundreds, and possibly even thousands of years. The Pitons are officially listed as Petit Piton which rises some 2,438’ above sea level, and Gros Piton at 2,619’. However, locals in the environs will tell you that there is also Piton Mitant, or the Middle Piton which is largely hidden from view.

Mountains of the Gods
Beyond their visual appeal these mountains have a deeper mystical and spiritual symbolism and it has been postulated that the Kalinago and Taino peoples who once inhabited St. Lucia may have worshipped them as their gods. Gros Piton would have been YOKAHU – their god of volcanic mountains, the sun, fire, thunder and food, with Petit Piton being ATABEYRA – the goddess of fertility, the moon, tides and moving water...Read More
Health Safety Commitment Recognition

Global industry research continues to highlight that prospective travelers place a high value to health safety certifications as the top consideration when choosing their vacation destination and accommodation provider. It is vital for hospitality businesses to continue to train their teams and seek these resources that will help provide reassurances to visitors, employees and residents.

These are not certifications, these are recognitions of your health safety commitment. Receipt of these tools is based on commitment from the organization to implement and continue compliance of the requirements set forth by CHTA along with the objectives established by the CARPHA-CTO-CHTA-OECS-GTRCMC COVID-19 Task Force...Read More
