Madison Club Parking Tips

The Downtown Madison Central Business Improvement District (BID) parking map, available at the following link, shows ALL garages and lots (city-owned and privately-owned) with parking available to the public.

Tips from long-time veterans of the parking challenge:
  • Earlier arrival, if your work life allows it, usually means easier parking;
  • If you find the city-owned Government East ramp marked FULL, consider waiting, even if there are 2-3 cars ahead of you; people leave for the lunch hour and some report that they seldom wait more than 5 minutes before gaining entry.
  • There are some 2-hour spots on several of the streets within a few short blocks of the Madison Club:  some accept either cash or credit card at a kiosk (e.g., 100 and 200 East blocks of Wilson, Webster Street in front of the GEF buildings); others are coin-only (e.g., further east on Wilson, Butler Street behind the GEF buildings, Henry Street to the west a couple blocks).
  • Monona Terrace has parking available; when the ramp is full, prominent signage will indicate that this is the case. You may enter either from Wilson Street, traveling west from the Madison Club, or from John Nolen Drive, traveling east. When you enter the ramp, go to the top outside level, and look for parking spaces below the Madison Club and the Olin Terrace Pedestrian Mall. Take the stairway up to street level and the Madison Club main entrance. See this map for a view of Monona Terrace and other nearby parking.
  • Car-pooling. TEMPO women are terrific at working together. If you need to share a ride, or want to offer a ride, join the TEMPO Facebook group and make a posting, or send us a note for our next newsletter. New members may want to peruse the TEMPO directory to find other members who may be driving in from your general location. Be sure to include TEMPO in your subje

Program
The May program will provide an update on the Overture Center's Diversity and Inclusion Initiative.  The Overture Center has evolved into a more diverse organization over the past several years.  It is working diligently to become a destination that can attract diverse groups of people to Downtown Madison.  Dr. Edward Homes will lead TEMPO members through the organization's journey from being a venue for "old white guys" to one that has built intentionally and smartly for Madison for years to come.

Speaker Biography

Dr. Edward S. (Ed) Holmes hails from the nation's capital, Washington, DC.  He attended UW Madison where he received his undergraduate degrees in English and Political Science, a MSSW graduate degree in Social Work and a PhD in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis.

Dr. Holmes currently serves as the Overture Center for the Arts' first Director of Diversity and Inclusion.

Ed is well known for founding, producing, and directing the Ebony Expression Cultural Awareness Project.  He has received city, county and congressional recognition for this innovative program dedicated to the development of the talents of African American youth and the education of the broader community about the richness and significance of African American culture.

His 40 year career in the Madison community has focused primarily on the implementation of creative community based arts and educational programs as well as the creation of inclusive, engaging, and academically successful public schools.  Holmes received the prestigious Milken Educator of the year award for the state of Wisconsin in 2003 for his work in the revitalization of the Wright Middle School, Madison Metropolitan School District's first Charter School.

Dr. Homes went on to successfully lead West High School for a decade, one of the top public high schools in the state of Wisconsin and nation.  He received the state of Wisconsin's first Martin Luther King Heritage Award for his work at the Neighborhood House and South Madison Neighborhood Centers, some of Madison's first multi-cultural low income communities.

It is important that you make reservations for the lunch or cancel your reservation if you are unable to attend.

We know that things come up, that schedules change, but we'd like to have  the best possible room set-up for our members and speakers, especially when it comes to audiovisual needs.

Accurate reservations are key to the room set-up. In addition, we'd like to reduce the number of meals wasted each month and minimize TEMPO expense.

If you make a reservation and need to cancel, please contact

President's Message

Susan Pigorsch, TEMPO President

Come Celebrate with TEMPO Members on June 13

In our relevance survey last year, you let us know that you'd like more opportunities to interact with TEMPO members, one-on-one, and to explore more ways to get involved with our 35-year-old organization. That's why we've decided to expand upon our traditional June luncheon/annual meeting, transforming it into a TEMPO celebration.

On June 13, at our usual Madison Club location and time, you'll have a chance to visit informally with fellow members and meet those who are currently participating in TEMPO committees and networking groups. We'll be offering sparkling beverages as you visit the Program committee to share ideas for great future luncheon speakers; chat with fellow book lovers about TEMPO's fiction and non-fiction book clubs; get tips on foreign destinations from our TEMPO travel group; or connect with the Networking committee to plan a fun TEMPO event on the day of the week that's best for you. This is your opportunity to enjoy one another and to find out more about TEMPO's membership recruitment, our TEMPO Foundation, our TEMPO Leadership Series at the Wisconsin School of Business, and our philanthropy through the TEMPO of Madison Scholarship and No Strings Attached. Most important, this is another chance to get to know the terrific, accomplished, and committed women who are striving to make Madison one of the best places in the nation to work and live. Oh, and did I mention the selfie station stocked with entertaining props? It'll be the perfect gathering place for new and old friends.

To encourage you to circulate among our organization's wonderful volunteers, and to make this member-to-member celebration even more fun, we'll also have a drawing for some fabulous gift baskets after an elegant, sit-down lunch with a special celebratory dessert.

Yes, we will conduct a brief bit of annual business from the podium, as required by our bylaws. But this year, in addition to taking action necessary to ensure the prosperous future of our organization and saluting our 20-year members, we will be connecting you to fellow TEMPO members and to the wonderful board members and volunteers who make our organization a pillar of our community. Please join us!

Each day professionals negotiate; managers bargain with subordinates, superiors, colleagues, suppliers, and customers. In fact, many everyday interactions involve negotiation. Leaders can hone their skills by focusing on a defined negotiating process. However, as humans, we may inadvertently limit our negotiation effectiveness. This talk encourages mindful attention to how you can identify and overcome pitfalls to become a stronger negotiator and leader.

Featured speaker Dr. Deb Houden is a faculty associate at the Wisconsin School of Business and director of the University of Wisconsin Family Business Center. Dr. Houden teaches a negotiations class to Wisconsin MBA executive students. She instructs through the Center for Professional Development and through the Center for Advanced Studies in Business. She has also taught Interpersonal Communication, Communication, and Conflict Resolution.

Marilyn Rhodes invites TEMPO members to provide "Cards for Life" through Operation Stardust.

UPH-Meriter Foundation is partnering with Operation Stardust to collect unused greeting cards for distribution to hospital or home bound patients who wish to write messages, notes, letters and other memories for loved ones to read on special occasions, whether it's a birthday, holiday or other special life event. The cards and stationery give patients the opportunity to stay connected with loved ones.

Operation Stardust was inspired by Madison-area resident Heather McManamy, who, while fighting breast cancer, wrote a series of greeting cards to celebrate her daughter's future milestones.

"Meriter is proud to partner with Operation Stardust to help patients retain a strong bond with family, children and friends," said Foundation President Marilyn Rhodes. "Sometimes a simple, 'I'm thinking of you,' can help patients feel connected and valued."

What people are saying about Operation Stardust:
  • "I just started to cry because of the amazing thing you are doing. [My husband] still wanted to do something for his kids that they can have forever. Thank you so much for thinking of us."
  • "Thank you so much. We don't even know you and you are making such an amazing contribution to our family right now."
  •  "Thank you for offering such an incredible gift."
For more on Operation Stardust, go to: http://www.operationstardust.org/
Greeting cards, blank notecards, and stationery can be mailed to:

Margaret Lemay - The Soul of the Upper Midwest: Timestacking by Mark Weller

Marƶeń is pleased to present the artwork of Mark Weller from May 5, 2017 through June 2, 2017 at 2345 Atwood Avenue Madison, WI. The artist reception will be held on MMoCA's Spring Gallery Night, May 5 from 5:00-9:00pm. Marzen will host an artist talk at 7pm and will provide catering from Bunky's.

We are pleased to present The Soul of the Upper Midwest: Timestacking by Mark Weller. Each of Weller's renderings are inspired by movement, some magnificently dramatic and some capturing motion imperceptibly subtle to the eye.

This exhibition will feature both his unique landscapes and vibrant abstraction unlike anything seen in Madison before. Though his process starts in the lens of a camera, his aesthetic draws on both the world of traditional painting and highly technical photography.

Weller is perpetually exploring new ways to evolve his compositions without the use of post processing beyond what he needs to timestack the images, which is comprised of many images shot over a short range of time, compressed into a single frame. Using his expert eye and his extensive knowledge, Weller will take thousands of shots in order to capture just the right moment in which the subject is "painted" across the composition.

Mark Weller is a Wisconsin native who has spent roughly 25 years specializing in photography. In his early career, he shot films in Alaska, afterward moving to Madison producing films for WPTV and in the early 90's becoming the CEO of a local telecommunications firm catering to rural areas statewide. In his free-time Weller began work as an astro-photographer, fund raising for the benefit of Wisconsin's beloved Apostle Islands, which led him to discover his unique, cloud swathed landscapes.

Marƶeń is conveniently located in the Atwood Avenue neighborhood at 2345 Atwood Ave. Our hours are Mon-Fri 11:00am-6:00pm and Saturday by appointment. We look forward to seeing you!

Shannon Barry - This year, Domestic Abuse Intervention Services is celebrating 40 years of not only helping victims of domestic violence survive, but helping them thrive. This is DAIS' largest fundraiser of the year with 100% of the proceeds going to support lifesaving programs. Purchase a ticket, host a table, or become a Luncheon sponsor by visiting our website .
