CCRC September Meeting

CAMPUS COMMUNITY RELATIONS -- CCRC is an on-line monthly meeting of neighborhoods surrounding the U of A. Representatives from Jefferson Park regularly attend. Highlights from the meeting, which affect Jefferson Park:

  • The UA Arboretum presented their programs, one of which is the a free tree tour-schedule below. Lots of information on their website. inforarboretum@cals.arizona.edu
  • Steve Kozachik noted that he could assist in getting TEP to give neighborhood presentations on their MIdtown upgrade proposal. Jefferson Park has a meeting scheduled with TEP on Nov. 15, the regular JPNA board meeting.
  • TEP Open House regarding their Midtown upgrade proposal (overhead lines) is Sept 21st 6-8pm in person only at Doubletree Hilton/Reid Park, 445 N. Alvernon Way.
  • Board of Adjustment public meeting on TEP request for a variance to exempt them from undergrounding lines along Campbell/Kino corridor is moved to October 25th at 1:30pm.
  • Community Safety Officer Kirsten Hinthorn indicated residents can contact her directly regarding any safety concerns. Kirsten.Hinthorn@tucsonaz.gov
  • Rincon Heights shared its Oct. 7 seed and plant exchange (see below).

With the defeat of Proposition 412, the Kino to DeMoss-Petri Project has gone back to the drawing board and is now named the TEP Midtown Reliability Project. TEP is going out to the community for public discussion on selecting a new route for the project to be identified within a slightly larger map (see above). Neighborhoods within this area have been notified that TEP will host an initial public meeting on Thursday, September 21, 6:00-8:00 pm, with the purpose of explaining the project, identifying possible new routes, and discussing options about some specifics of the project. We encourage you to attend the meeting. It will be held in person only at The DoubleTree Hilton - Reid Park, 445 S. Alvernon Way. If you are unable to attend the meeting, please consider submitting an online comment. For more information, and to submit an online comment, a project webpage is available at  Midtown Reliability Project – Tucson Electric Power (tep.com)

TEP no longer appears to be considering undergrounding this project. They are only considering placing long lines of industrial-sized pylons and transmission wires, intending to give us choices not about undergrounding but instead about whether the pylons are 10 stories or seven stories high (with many more of the latter), what the color of the pylons will be, etc., etc. It is critical that those who oppose the above-ground construction of such a permanent blight through the heart of our city make their voices heard at the September 21 meeting. The core of the project will be the university area, from Country Club to Stone and Broadway to Grant. Among other things, TEP seems to hope that all of us will ignore the City’s duly enacted mandate, stated in its University Area Plan, that new utilities within this entire area be placed underground.

TEP has just gone to the Board of Adjustment to appeal the August 25, 2021 Zoning Administrator's decision. This decision upheld the gateway and scenic ordinances requiring undergrounding on the Kino/Campbell gateway and said that TEP must comply with the ordinances. It appears that TEP requests that the entire project be excluded from the ordinances and run overhead. If TEP succeeds, it would place the Kino/Campbell route at great risk once again. It would also place all other of city’s gateway and scenic routes and possibly also the University Area Plan at risk both now and in the future. This hearing will be held virtually on Wednesday, October 25 at 1:30 p.m.; it is a crucial meeting. Please plan on participating. There will be a time during the meeting for the public to make brief comments to the board. There is also a way to submit written comments before the meeting. More information to follow as the meeting date draws near.

Undergrounding lines is essential if we are to maintain the Old Pueblo's unique character, develop and sustain tourism, and improve the general health of the city. We appreciate your ongoing support and participation throughout the past three years.

Three important dates for you to provide your input:

1) SEP 21 - TEP will host a Public Open House about the project, 6–8 p.m., Doubletree Hotel—Reid Park, 445 S. Alvernon Way, Tucson, AZ 85711.

2) OCT 25 - Board of Adjustment Hearing to be held virtually,1:30 p.m TEP will appeal to the Board of Adjustment, requesting to place lines overhead. It is a crucial meeting; please plan on participating.

3) NOV 15 - Jefferson Park has scheduled a meeting with TEP for November 15 at 6:00 p.m. at Ward III, so we are able to discuss our specific concerns (see above).

A project webpage is available at Midtown Reliability Project—Tucson Electric Power (tep.com), where visitors will find an interactive map, an online comment form, and other information about the project. Note corrected date change for the Board of Adjustment Hearing from the recently mailed postcard.

Help with the Rainwater Basin at Ward III

Saturday Oct 23 - 8 to 11:30

Jefferson Park neighbors are invited to a rain garden planting at the Ward 3 office. If you would like to attend, please register to do so. Here's the registration link:

https://watershedmg.org/event/community-workshop-ward-3-rain-garden-retrofit

The event is on Saturday 9/23, from 8:00 am - 11:30 am, and we're hosting it in conjunction with Watershed Management Group's Build Your Own Basin (BYOB) program. So all participants are invited to take home a BYOB kit that includes a 1-gallon native shade tree, a native bunch grass, a shrub, a bag of mulch, and WMG's BYOB Zine.

The event is happening at our office in Jefferson Park, and I know there are quite a few rainwater harvesting enthusiasts in the neighborhood - it's obvious from all the lovely yards and street-side basins.

Donations to Casa Alitas Refugees

.... needed now more than ever

Per Steve Kozachik's newsletter: "I’m in touch with some of our shelter operators and the description I get of the number of guests being delivered by CBP is that they’re already ‘very slammed.’ The numbers will escalate once the government ends the COVID-based restrictions on entry that Title 42 was to address. So, we will need your donations even more than we have during what has been a relative (very relative) lull in the number of arrivals. We’ve been seeing 300-500 people daily".

SEEKING DONATIONS OF PERSONAL HYGIENE PRODUCTS AND UNDERCLOTHING (SOCKS, UNDERWEAR, BRAS) ESPECIALLY IN SIZES SMALL AND MEDIUM

DROP OFF AT WARD VI OFFICE - 3202 E First St - between 9 and 1.

The folks running the Alitas Welcome Center come by the Ward VI weekly to gather the donations you bring into the office. The weekly trips are necessary because they continue to get 300-500 new arrivals daily at Alitas.

We can’t get families who helped in our own war effort united, and we leave it up to donors to help with people coming across our border escaping trauma in their home countries. At the Ward 6 office we continue to be grateful to all of you who see the needs and support the people we’re serving. (from Ward VI newsletter)
