TFH Appalachia Annual Meeting

TFH Appalachia Annual Meeting

February 4 - FBC Corbin, KY

Forty one, coalition members, regional leaders, and friends joined us at First Baptist Church, Corbin, KY, and online, for our TFH Appalachia Annual Meeting on February 4. TFH is grateful for FBC Corbin's hospitality, flexibility, and support in hosting the event. Participants toured the FBC Corbin Mustard Seed Community Garden and Food Pantry and engaged with a panel of Food Pantry leaders (Janie Akin, FBC Corbin, Chelsey Pittman, Cooperative Christian Ministry, Middlesboro, and Linda Witt, Emma Quire Mission Center, Owsley County). Participants also heard updates from TFH Appalachia Coalition Members and friends and listened to compelling presentations and engaged in dialogue with Dr. Kathryn Engle, Director of the University of Kentucky Appalachian Center, on "Challenges to Overcoming Economic Insecurity: An Intersectional Approach," and with Peter Hille, Chief Executive Officer for the Mountain Association, on the topic, "Beyond Poverty: East Kentucky’s Economic Future." Rev. Alex Lockridge, FBC Corbin, pastor, wrapped up our day with reflections and a benediction. After dinner, some returned to view the film, Rising Hope. TFH Appalachia is energized by the vision, experience, compassion, and passion of our friends doing great work in the region.

We believe that there is, at least, one thing we all have in common in our collective work:

We would like to see the end to poverty

and for all....

quality education

access to healthcare

adequate daily nutrition

warm, save, and dry housing (thanks ASP)

meaningful work and a livable income.

Sebrena and Keith Tour Eastern Kentucky with Emily Zilich Thomas, TFH Chief Development Officer

University of Kentucky Appalachian Center

The team's tour began on Monday, February 3. Before picking up Emily Zilich Thomas at the airport in Lexington, Sebrena and Keith made a quick visit to the University of Kentucky Appalachian Center. "Located on UK's main campus, the Center is a space for students, faculty, staff and community members to join forces in learning about and educating others about this beautiful region that faces unique opportunities and challenges toward sustainable development in a globalized context."

The New Opportunity School for Women

Emily, Sebrena, and Keith's first visit was with Jennifer Walden (interim executive director) and the staff of the New Opportunity School for Women (NOSW) in Berea. We can't say enough good things about the work of our friends at NOSW. Their hallway of graduates shows that for many years they have been true to their mission: "The New Opportunity School for Women provides a place for under-resourced women to build confidence and skills to make changes they want to see in their lives." If you know of someone who could benefit, refer them to NOSW and consider making a financial gift (nosw.org/donate-support-our-mission).

Berea College Appalachian Fund

As Together for Hope's Chief Development Officer, Emily was especially happy to meet Davey King, Director of the Berea College Appalachian Fund, and to learn of the kinds of grants that might be available for our coalition members. The Fund "supports nonprofit organizations working to improve the quality of life in central Appalachia through the priority areas of: health, education, social services, and folk arts and cultures." Berea College has been a center of support for the Appalachian region of Kentucky. Berea was the first integrated, co-educational college in the South and charges no tuition.

First Baptist Church, Corbin, Kentucky

In Corbin the team met up with our colleague, Rev. Charlton Johnson, TFH Vice President for the Delta region, where they stopped in at the original Kentucky Fried Chicken and Museum, before setting up for the TFH Appalachia Annual Meeting held the next day at First Baptist Church Corbin.

Appalachian Immersion Experience - First Baptist Church, Middlesboro, Kentucky

The next stop, Wednesday morning after the annual meeting, was the Appalachian Immersion Experience at First Baptist Church, Middlesbooro, where the Rev. Dr. Kristy Bay offered a tour of their excellent facilities, with multiple beds and showers, kitchen facilities, and gym, in a strategic location that offers much to do in this Appalachian region for fun, service, and learning. If you are looking for a place to learn and serve, as a volunteer team, First Baptist Church of Middlesboro, KY's Appalachian Immersion Experience is a great option. "Appalachian Immersion offers youth and adult groups service and learning experiences that seek to replace stereotypes about the people, region, and culture of southeastern Kentucky with enduring relationships of Christian hospitality and hope."

Cooperative Christian Ministry - CCM

Just a block from Appalachian Immersion is Cooperative Christian Ministry. Chelsey Pittman, Associate Director of CCM, was one of our panelists for the Food Pantries Roundtable at our TFH Annual Meeting. CCM takes seriously Jesus' words in Matthew 25, as they feed and cloth and serve their neighbors in so many ways. If you visit the Appalachian Immersion Experience, you will want to spend some time at CCM in Middlesboro, Kentucky. TFH Appalachia is proud to partner with CCM.

Georgetown Baptist Church

The TFH team had a nice visit Wednesday afternoon with Georgetown Baptist Church pastor, Patrick Devane, and Associate Pastor of Children and Church Communications, Ashley Gill Harrington. Georgetown Baptist has a heart for their community, the region, and the world. They have been an integral part of CBF Kentucky's Extreme Build in McCreary County, Kentucky, contributing many volunteers and hours to the building of a home each summer.

Immanuel Baptist Church, Frankfort, Kentucky

From Georgetown the team traveled to Frankfort, the capital city of Kentucky. Emily Zilich Thomas was looking forward to visiting, Immanuel Baptist Church, to thank them for their generous support for Together for Hope Appalachia. Emily, Sebrena, and Keith met with the Rev. Dr. Emily Holladay, and Steve Dooley, mission committee chairperson. Through the years, Immanuel Baptist has been actively engaged in ministry in eastern Kentucky.

First Baptist Church on Saint Clair, Frankfort, Kentucky

The team concluded the day at First Baptist Church Frankfort on Saint Clair Street. They joined the church for their fellowship supper and then made a TFH presentation to those church members present and on Facebook Live. They provided updates on some new partnerships, introduced Emily and Sebrena, Sebrena shared about her work in West Virginia, and they thanked the church for FBC's partnership with TFH from the beginning through the Emma Quire Mission Center and for their continuing financial support. Keith was a member of FBC while he was in seminary over 30 years ago and he joined again a few years ago, briefly serving as Interim Minister of Spiritual Formation.

Lexington Avenue Baptist Church

Emily, Sebrena, and Keith's final stop on their tour was with Rev. Basil Hall at Lexington Avenue Baptist Church (LABC) in Danville, Kentucky where Keith resides. Before beginning his work with TFH, Keith served as associate pastor at LABC. Lexington Avenue Baptist was heavily engaged with Together for Hope from the start, maintaining an ongoing relationship with the community of Nada in Powell County, KY, and also frequently visiting Owsley County to work through the Emma Quire Mission Center. TFH Appalachia is grateful for the generous financial support of Lexington Avenue Baptist.

Appalachia Service Project (ASP)

asphome.org/opportunities

Appalachia Service Project (ASP) is a Christian ministry, open to all people, that inspires hope and service through volunteer home repair and replacement in Central Appalachia. ASP provides one of the most rewarding structured service opportunities in the nation — bringing thousands of volunteers from around the country to provide critical home repairs for hundreds of low-income families each year.

Since 1969, we’ve made homes warmer, safer, and drier for families and provided transformational service experiences for volunteers. Construction and building experience is not required; however, groups are encouraged to bring skilled leaders if possible. ASP matches the skill level of groups with project requirements. Volunteer groups serve in work crews of five to seven people (including at least two adults age 19+) and work for a few days or a week at a time.

Our summer program begins June 8th, kicking off 9 weeks of service across Appalachia. More than 8,000 volunteers will serve over 200 families, building relationships and homes along the way. Our summer program includes everything from accommodations to constructions materials and evening programing. ASP provides everything you need for your week of service. We also offer opportunities in the spring and fall, and all trips are open to youth, adult, college, and inter-generational groups. All volunteers must have completed 6th grade.

More information about volunteering, including information about registering a group to serve this year, is available via our website, or by contacting Allie Acevedo, Volunteer Recruitment Manager (allie.acevedo@asphome.org / 423-914-3611).

Appalachian Immersion Experience

What is Appalachian Immersion?

Appalachian Immersion offers youth and adult groups service and learning experiences that seek to replace stereotypes about the people, region, and culture of southeastern Kentucky with enduring relationships of Christian hospitality and hope. Where our faith tradition has been keen to “go and tell,” Immersion offers to come alongside and to listen.

A Holistic Approach to Missions in the Mountains

In 2014, Middlesboro’s First Baptist Church signed on to a vision: become a place where groups could come and do missions in the mountains with integrity.

Accomodations: With a gracious gift from the estate of S.H. and Evelyn Flowers, the church repurposed its underused education wing into what members and neighbors now call “the mission wing.” There are bunk beds in two different rooms, as well as a suite with a meeting space and private bedrooms for leaders. There are two half-bathrooms, two full bathrooms, and a total of six showers.

In the past few years, there have been about dozen groups—some from churches, some from seminaries—come to serve and learn in Appalachia. Serve and learn, for God is already here and up to something, and just like every other place in the world, Appalachia too has something to teach.

We believe in serving our neighbors in their need. We believe in being the change we want to see in the world, right here in Appalachia. This region and its people are often misunderstood. Rather than letting the stereotypes of the broader culture remain unchallenged, we seek to nuance and enrich people’s perceptions of this poorly understood region in America. Groups come and serve and learn, and as they do so, they change and they change us. It’s a new way of doing missions.
