Notes from the Chair:

Re: Updates and a Big Thank You!

The KCDP/BAD office is operational and we have already had several meetings there and a wonderful opening celebration on November 8. The room was packed and so neat to see folks out on a miserable night.  A big thank you to all the sustaining donors who are making the KCDP/BAD full time office financially possible.   A big thank you to the team lead by Julie Jones and her able assistant Julie Rosenberger who painted, cleaned and renovated the space. It is really something. We won’t start formal office hours until after the holidays and are just now developing a plan. We have had tremendous response to our requests for equipment and furniture donations. We now have everything we need which includes a 55” TV, refrigerator, high speed laser printer, color printer copier, meeting tables, blue wave screen and much more.  Again, a big thank you to all of you who have made this possible. We still need to raise more funds for our 2020 get out the vote efforts so please participate in the online auction or sign up to give a sustaining gift.

We will have the office dedication celebration and ribbon cutting at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3. Come join us so we can have a great picture.
Wendy Davis and Jennie Lou Leeder, our congressional candidates, plan to be there.

The November 5 amendment election had typical poor turnout but Kendall County beat the state by a big margin. We had 18.2% turnout versus just 12% statewide. We also got to see how countywide voting and some new equipment worked. In general, we are very pleased with how it all went.  Thank you to all the poll workers who did early voting and the 14-hour election day marathon shifts.  The only amendment on the ballot that did not pass was Proposition 1, which would have permitted elected municipal court judges to serve multiple municipalities at the same time.

Comfort Independent School District voters supported the district's $37.7 million bond with 691 people, or 59 percent, for the measure while 478, 41 percent, were against it.

Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner. Hard to believe 2019 has passed so quickly. It is time to give thanks for all that we have and to help folks who are not so fortunate. Hill Country Family Services www.hcfstx.org, RAICES refugee and immigrant center www.raicestexas.org and the Kendall county Animal Shelter ( (830) 537-3430 ) are great places to extend a helping hand.

I want to reiterate my personal appreciation for all that you are doing for the Kendall County Democratic Party.

Progressive Views:
Voting Should Be Easy
by Laura Bray

ï»żfor the “Progressive Views” column, Boerne Star, November 15, 2019

A recent study ranked Texas as the  fifth-hardest state in which to vote . Voter turnout in Texas is historically low, in large part due to unnecessary barriers to voting and registration. Several processes would make voting and registration easier, but our current elected officials refuse to consider them. Does Texas use any of these processes:
  • Online voter registration? Nope. (Texas is one of only 12 states that don’t allow online registration.)
  • Register on Election Day? Nope. (Seventeen other states allow this.)
  • Anyone can register someone to vote? Nope. (Texas is the only state that requires Volunteer Deputy Registrars to attend a class and be certified to register voters. And VDRs must obtain a certificate for every county in which they wish to register voters.)
  • Automatically registering someone to vote when they apply for a new drivers license? Nope. (Thirteen other states allow this.)

Texas’s Voter ID law is one of the most restrictive in the nation. The “acceptable” forms of ID clearly favor conservative voters—a concealed carry license is acceptable form of ID, while a student ID is not.
