A Pastoral Perspective

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8 NLT)

The enemy of our faith knows that he is a defeated foe, but this fact does not deter him from waging warfare against the saints of God. He is determined to go down fighting and desires to take as many as possible to everlasting damnation with him.

He uses any method to accomplish his goal, including ignorance, confusion, lies, and deception. But perhaps his most potent weapon is to cause some saints to sow discord among the membership. When seeds of discord take root, they stun church progress by causing division.

Pastor Scruggs and I discussed the cause and effect of sowing discord within the church during Word on Wednesday Faith Development. Our purpose was to reveal the truth in order to unify our church. While we have various spiritual gifts, we all should have the same mission. This shared mission is what unites us and guides our actions.

Sowing discord involves one member saying and doing things that cause distrust among other church members, resulting in arguments and disagreements. Sowing discord is often done in secret and influenced by the “father of lies,” the devil.

The devil is looking for anyone in the church that he can deceive to sow discord among us. We need to stay alert so that we will not become the soil that he uses. Let’s look for the good things and not the bad. Let’s focus on what is going right instead of what is not. Let’s speak encouraging words about our sisters and brothers and not discouraging words. Let’s lift the pastor up with compliments and not tear him down with negative condemnation. Our focus on the positive will keep us optimistic in our journey.

We are one Body in Christ working in the King’s vineyard. Let’s sow seeds that will produce good fruit and not discord.
