From A Pastoral Perspective

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Thessalonians 5:23 NKJV)

Our LORD is concerned about our whole being. He created us in His image and likeness. Thus, we are triune beings of body, soul, and spirit. This means we have a physical, mental, and spiritual makeup. The health and care of all three elements are important to God.

But spiritual health is even more vital among believers. Just as we can have physical and mental challenges, we can also face spiritual difficulties. Failures, disappointments, and unfulfilled expectations can cause a spiritual crisis. When left unresolved, loss of faith, hope, and desire can be the result.

We often discuss spiritual health issues using terms such as “church burnout.” The truth is that we get frustrated when we don’t see the desired result from our labor. We often feel guilty when asked to do something we don’t want to do, or that is beyond our spiritual capability. Many think saying “no” is a sin.

Another issue is not knowing your purpose, calling, or spiritual gift can lead to spiritual oppression, and the weight is too much to bear.

The cure for spiritual health issues is the Word of God. The prescription includes worship, study, and fellowship with other believers. But like with other health issues, no healing will take place unless we take our medicine.
