Celebrating the Entrepreneurial Spirit That Built a Nation

As America prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday in 2026, we have an opportunity not only to reflect on our nation’s history, but also to recognize the entrepreneurs and small businesses that continue to shape its future.
From family-owned restaurants and neighborhood retailers to technology startups and global trade companies, small businesses have always been at the heart of the American story. They fuel innovation, create jobs, strengthen local economies, and represent the resilience and determination that define our nation.
For immigrant and minority-owned businesses in particular, entrepreneurship has long been a pathway to opportunity and economic empowerment. Across Houston and throughout the country, Asian American-owned businesses have helped build thriving communities, introduced new ideas and cultures, and contributed significantly to America’s economic growth and global competitiveness.
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses account for nearly half of all private sector jobs in the United States. They are often the first to adapt, innovate, and respond to the changing needs of consumers and communities. Their success reflects the entrepreneurial spirit that has driven America forward for 250 years.
As we commemorate this historic milestone, it is important to continue investing in and supporting small businesses through mentorship, access to capital, workforce development, and strategic partnerships. Chambers of commerce, community organizations, and business leaders all play an important role in creating opportunities for entrepreneurs to grow and succeed.
The Asian Chamber of Commerce remains committed to supporting and elevating Asian American and minority-owned businesses through advocacy, education, networking, and economic development initiatives. Together, we can help ensure that the next 250 years of American innovation and prosperity include diverse voices, bold ideas, and thriving small business communities.

| HAAPIFEST 2026 Celebrates AAPI Stories Through Film, Culture, and Community | |
The Chamber is proud to support HAAPIFEST 2026 alongside community partner OCA-Greater Houston as the festival continues through June 14 in Houston and online. Hosted at the DoubleTree Westchase, HAAPIFEST showcases a powerful lineup of films, documentaries, and short films from across the AAPI diaspora, highlighting stories of identity, family, culture, resilience, and community through authentic storytelling.
Now underway, the festival offers audiences an opportunity to experience compelling and often underrepresented stories from emerging and established filmmakers whose work reflects the richness and diversity of AAPI experiences. From intimate personal journeys to thought-provoking cultural narratives, HAAPIFEST creates space for dialogue, connection, and celebration through film.
Whether you are a film enthusiast, creative professional, or community advocate, HAAPIFEST 2026 offers an unforgettable cultural experience that brings communities together through the power of storytelling.

Asian Chamber Hosts Informative Session on SBA Lending Changes and Opportunities for 2026

Business professionals, lenders, investors, and entrepreneurs recently gathered for an important discussion on the evolving SBA lending landscape and what the latest changes mean for businesses and commercial real estate professionals moving forward.
Hosted in partnership with industry leaders and stakeholders, the event provided attendees with valuable insights into the most significant SBA policy updates in years, including stricter ownership requirements and the return of the SBA Franchise Directory. Experts discussed how these changes are reshaping the lending environment and what businesses need to know to successfully secure funding in 2026 and beyond.
Attendees also had the opportunity to hear directly from SBA representatives about new federal policy shifts and their impact on financing opportunities. In addition to the educational component, the event created valuable networking opportunities for members of the Asian Chamber of Commerce and AREAA, helping participants expand their professional connections and referral networks.
The session also introduced attendees to the “2026 Roadmap,” offering an early look at lending trends and strategies to help professionals better advise clients and position their businesses for success in a rapidly changing market.
The event was held on May 21, 2026, at the University of Houston Texas Gulf Coast Small Business Development Center Network in partnership with AREAA.
| | Connections, Community & Celebration: Asian Chamber Hosts Vibrant AAPI Heritage Month Mixer | |
The Chamber celebrated AAPI Heritage Month with a successful Networking Night Mixer on May 26 at Beyond FlexSpace, bringing together more than 70 professionals, entrepreneurs, and community leaders for an evening focused on connection, collaboration, and community.
One of the highlights of the evening was an engaging Speed Networking session that sparked meaningful conversations and created new opportunities for attendees to expand their professional and community networks. The energy continued throughout the evening as guests stayed to mix and mingle, enjoy Beyond FlexSpace’s beautiful lounge and panoramic views, and tour the impressive coworking and event space.
The event reflected the strength and diversity of Houston’s vibrant Asian American and Pacific Islander business community while providing an opportunity for both new and familiar faces to connect in a welcoming and dynamic environment.
Thank you to Beyond FlexSpace for hosting the event and helping create such an inviting atmosphere for this memorable AAPI Heritage Month celebration.

Last month, the City of Stafford, in partnership with the Asia Society Texas Center and the Asian Chamber, hosted a spectacular AAPI Heritage Month celebration in honor of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
Held at the Stafford Centre, the event brought together hundreds of community members for an evening of culture, entertainment, and connection under the theme, “Together We Shine: A Multicultural Celebration of America’s 250th Anniversary.”

The program featured musicians, dancers, and performers representing more than 10 countries, showcasing the rich traditions and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. From vibrant cultural performances to exciting raffle giveaways, the evening highlighted the diversity, talent, and spirit that help make our region and nation stronger.
As America prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, the event served as a meaningful reminder of the important role AAPI communities have played in shaping our country’s history, economy, and cultural landscape. The celebration was a powerful reflection of the unity, diversity, and shared experiences that continue to define the American story.

Asian Chamber Launches Supplier Development Academy to Help Businesses Compete for Contract | | | | |
The Chamber recently hosted its Supplier Development Academy, an innovative program designed to help small businesses strengthen their competitive edge and successfully pursue corporate and public sector contracting opportunities.
The academy kicked off with an in-person session on May 18 at the Interactive College of Technology, where participants had the opportunity to connect with industry professionals and gain valuable insights into the procurement process. The hybrid program combines in-person engagement with online learning modules to provide businesses with practical tools and strategies for winning bids and building lasting supplier relationships.

Participants received guidance from decision-makers representing major corporations and the public sector on what buyers look for when selecting suppliers and how businesses can position themselves for success. Topics covered throughout the academy included researching bid opportunities and vendor registration, building a strong capability statement, reading and analyzing bids, understanding the application process, and improving pitching and networking skills.
The Supplier Development Academy reflects the Chamber’s ongoing commitment to supporting the growth and success of small and minority-owned businesses by providing access to education, resources, and connections that help entrepreneurs compete in today’s marketplace.

| From Houston to Capitol Hill: Asian Chamber Helps Shape National Conversations | | |
The Asian Chamber recently joined business, community, and policy leaders from across the country in Washington, D.C., to participate in two important national advocacy events focused on advancing opportunities for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities and small businesses.
The Chamber first participated in the 2026 Legislative Leadership Summit (LLS), hosted by the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS). The annual summit brings together nonprofit and corporate leaders, policy experts, and elected officials to discuss issues affecting the Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AA & NH/PI) community while fostering civic engagement and leadership development.

This year's summit featured a robust agenda that explored some of the nation's most pressing issues. Attendees participated in plenary sessions focused on artificial intelligence innovation, voting rights, and public policy, as well as breakout discussions addressing women's health, food access, and community well-being. As part of the summit, Asian Chamber representatives met with Congressman Pete Sessions, Congressman Al Green, and Congressman Christian Menefee to discuss issues impacting the business community and strengthen relationships with federal policymakers.
Building on those conversations, the Chamber also participated in National ACE's Capitol Hill Day. Hosted by the National Asian/Pacific Islander American Chamber of Commerce and Entrepreneurship (National ACE), the event brought together small business owners, entrepreneurs, chamber leaders, and community advocates from across the country to engage directly with members of Congress and their staff.

Discussions focused on key issues including workforce development, access to capital, artificial intelligence adoption, energy policy, and international commerce. A recurring theme throughout both events was the power of personal stories. By sharing real-world business experiences and community perspectives, participants helped policymakers better understand how federal decisions affect local businesses, families, and communities.
The Asian Chamber remains committed to ensuring the voice of Houston's diverse business community is represented at every level of government. Through participation in national advocacy efforts such as the APAICS Legislative Leadership Summit and National ACE's Capitol Hill Day, the Chamber continues to build relationships, influence policy discussions, and champion opportunities that help businesses and communities thrive.

Asian Chamber Foundation Celebrates AAPI Heritage Month at Houston City Hall | | |
The Asian Chamber Foundation concluded AAPI Heritage Month with a special cultural celebration for Asian American and Pacific Islander employees across the city on May 27 at Houston City Hall. The event brought together 60 attendees representing more than 35 corporations, as well as members of the City's Asian American and Pacific Islander Employee Resource Group (ERG), to celebrate the rich diversity and contributions of AAPI communities.
Gigi Lee of the Mayor's Office of Trade and International Affairs welcomed guests and highlighted the importance of fostering inclusive workplaces and strong community partnerships. Mark Winchester, Houston District Director of the U.S. Small Business Administration, provided an overview of the AAPI business landscape and the significant role Asian-owned businesses play in driving economic growth and innovation.

Paul Gor, Co-Director of the Asian Chamber, shared data on the continued growth of Houston's Asian population, as well as changing demographic trends across Texas and the nation. His presentation underscored the increasing influence and contributions of Asian Americans in shaping the region's economic and cultural future.
The event provided an opportunity for corporate leaders, community advocates, and City of Houston employees to connect, learn, and celebrate the achievements of the AAPI community. It also served as a fitting conclusion to AAPI Heritage Month and a reminder of the important contributions Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders continue to make throughout Houston and beyond.

Throughout the month, the Chamber amplified AAPI-owned businesses and shared resources designed to help entrepreneurs grow and thrive in today’s evolving economy.
The Chamber also participated in networking events, business forums, and community gatherings that fostered meaningful connections and highlighted the importance of supporting minority-owned businesses. These events created opportunities for business owners to build relationships, exchange ideas, and explore partnerships that contribute to long-term economic success.
As Houston continues to grow as one of the most diverse cities in the nation, the Chamber remains committed to advocating for and empowering the AAPI business community year-round. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and many AAPI entrepreneurs continue to overcome challenges while building companies that serve, employ, and inspire communities across the region.
AAPI Heritage Month reminds us that diversity is not only something to celebrate — it is also a key driver of innovation, creativity, and economic opportunity.
