The last few days have been filled with sadness and fear and anger over the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. So many members of this community, myself included, have friends and family who have been impacted by the atrocities happening. 

Every country has the right to self-defense, and I’m very clear-eyed about both the existential risks of antisemitic violence and the oppression that Palestinian people face. I remember, in the wake of Charlottesville, being glad for the presence of a strong Israel: somewhere that, if antisemitism were to continue to rise, I could feel safe. I grew up in the Deep South, and I was living in the Carolinas when it happened. I know that fear well. But I also deeply empathize with the millions of people living under an occupation that deprives them of basic needs. 

I work in politics because I believe it can and should be a force for good. And I’m scared about the extreme right-wing politics of fear that’s driving hatred and violence. 

I’ve often borrowed an old line from Hillary Clinton about politics being the art of making the impossible possible. I really believe that. It’s why I join with all of you every day to make our country a better place. 

The crisis we’re facing is the result of decades of the most cynical politics possible - driven by extremist leaders taking advantage of people who are frightened and trying to find better futures for themselves and their families. Rather than calling upon the best of their people, they grow their power by fanning the flames of hatred, leading to the killing of innocent civilians through bombs and blockades. 

We’re in this work together because we feel called towards a politics that can and should be better. Because we deserve leaders who care deeply about the people they serve, and use their power to make life better. So please stay in this fight. Join together and support one another in a tough time. Remember why we do this work: to elect leaders who will call us to our highest ideals, rather than sink us to our lowest depths.

VOLUNTEERS SHOUT-OUT: BRIANNA & WAYNE

Everything we do at Field Team 6 is about creating connections, and this one made us smile. FT6 Volunteer Program Coordinator Brianna Beckier and Director of Operations Wayne Liebman have been working behind the scenes together for three years populating our many volunteer teams with just the right mix of new and impossibly talented recruits. Even though they both live in Los Angeles, they've been Zooming all that time without ever meeting in person. Until this week when they bumped into each other all the way across the pond at Heathrow Airport in London. Both had been in Europe the previous week, Bri on a British Isles tour and Wayne meeting with fellow revolutionaries (because he never stops). To their surprise and delight, they found themselves boarding the same flight home. Cheers to this dynamic duo, and to all the chance encounters that make what we do possible.
