PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Greetings Families,

2020 continues to be an exciting roller coaster ride for us all! I am proud of our community for remaining calm despite circumstances that are not in our control. The election, Covid-19 restrictions, and safely reopening schools are just a few of the topics on my mind at this very moment. Despite these important topics, I would like to thank you for participating in your child’s conference this week. Maintaining a quality educational program remains a priority. Recently, every grade level team participated in a process called “Kid-by-Kid”. At these meetings, we focused on student’s literacy and reading levels while documenting as a site team how to best support students moving forward. With input from general education teachers and specialists, our internal network of support remains strong, solution-oriented, with an overarching theme of supporting each student.

Last Friday was such an exciting day for all Cool Cats! All students had a blast participating in virtual Halloween activities and the school-wide Monster Mash Costume and Dance Celebration. All 5th grade students participated in a Thriller dance which was quite the feat and an absolute blast! Students were engaged, respectful, and most importantly they were full of smiles. As many pilots are in-progress throughout our district, we continue to learn valuable information about how to best support students in-person. Here are a few pictures from this week:
Please consider joining this planning meeting #2 regarding the modernization of our blacktop and field areas. This discussion will continue to solicit staff and parent feedback on key planning areas including covered lunch areas, solar, turf and breezeways. We appreciate your support and look forward to working together to modernize our campus exterior.

Time: 6:30pm - 8:00pm

A global pandemic, wildfires, political elections, and school re-opening are just a few hot topics in the headlines today. Hearing and engaging in the conversations around these things can have us all feeling a little anxious. Are you prepared to effectively talk with your family about these current news events?

Parenting Continuum is hosting a 90-minute workshop with Common Sense Education and Project Cornerstone on tips and techniques to prepare our children for tomorrow's headlines. You will leave this highly interactive session with:

- Strategies for better communication with your family using the research-based Developmental Assets Framework* to help children and teens gain skills needed to make good choices, take responsibility, and become independent and fulfilled adults.

- Tips and techniques for navigating potentially sensitive topics with elementary and middle school children in a complex media environment.

- Greater confidence as a parent or guardian to acquire healthy mind habits and digital citizenship - how to use technology in a safe, responsible and effective way.

Come to this session to ready yourself as a parent/guardian, improve your family relationships & dynamics, and help create a calm and supportive home environment where children can become their best.

WHAT BEING ON THE BOARD MEANS TO ME
"Being on the H&SC Board has allowed me not only to be deeply involved in my children's education, but also to learn about and participate in all aspects of the school, from the various programs offered to community events. I've learned new skills, met many wonderful people, and have seen firsthand how important the village is to making our school a success. It has been a truly rewarding experience. Any parent who wants to get more involved should absolutely join this great team!"
Raegan Kail, Communications
The H&SC Board is looking for a new member ASAP to serve in the position of President-Elect. The President-Elect will be an invaluable member of the Board this year who will transition to H&SC President for the 2021-2022 school year, and then to Parliamentarian for the 2022-2023 school year. The ideal candidate will be a parent with children in the 3rd grade or younger, who wants to take on a leadership role at Daves Avenue supported by a great team! This opportunity is absolutely open to working parents.
Interested? Have more questions? Or know someone who may be a great candidate?
If you would like to join our Board, please email Vice-President, Emma Garner.
