Volume 2 | Edition 36 | 2019-2020
June 3, 2020
The Avenue wishes all Cool Cat families a safe, healthy, and happy summer! Stay tuned in early August for our Summer Edition to kick off the 2020-21 school year. Cheers!
Greetings Daves Avenue Families,
When I reflect on this school year, I am especially fond of the many Wednesday Wave assemblies where our Cool Cats recited our Kindness & Peace Pledge. I am grateful for our moments, under one roof, pre-pandemic, where our community and students came together. This video was taken by Mrs. Karen Briones, LGUSD Communications Coordinator, just days before our school closure.
For the first time ever this morning, our amazing Kindergarten teachers held a virtual Fly Away Ceremony. Zooming from the front office was extra special for our youngest Cool Cats!
I would like to extend sincere appreciation to our Home & School Club Board for their efforts this school year: Lani Harr (President), Becky Tanner (Vice President), Emma Garner (Co-Vice President), Jennifer Lambert (Parliamentarian), Jill Cox (Secretary), Raegan Kail (Communications), Sherry Lee (Co-Treasurer), Barbara McInerney (Co-Treasurer). Thank you to all of the parents who served as committee chairs and those who volunteered on campus. On behalf of the staff, we are grateful for your care, commitment, and unwavering support for our students and community. As communication and safety continue to be among our top priorities, I am proud to announce that a digital marquee was successfully installed on Monday. A huge shout-out to our Director of Maintenance and Operations, Mr. Thomas Lettiere, for helping to coordinate the details. Together, anything is possible!
Please join me in bidding farewell to Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Leslie Wooley, and Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Sue Esquivel, as they sail off into a well-deserved retirement. Additionally, I would like to thank Kindergarten teacher, Jessica Spencer, and 3rd Grade teacher, Jessica Baker, for their years of service at Daves Avenue. We will miss you at Daves and we wish you luck on your next adventures.
How is the last day of the school year here? Tomorrow, June 4th, is a special day for our 5th grade Cool Cats, families, and community members! Thank you to Daves Avenue parent, Mr. Andrew Ishak, for volunteering his time and expertise to create a video masterpiece which will be cherished for years to come. Please join this celebratory moment and enjoy watching the Daves Avenue Promotion video which will be streamed on YouTube at 10:00 A.M. All families, Kindergarten through 5th Grade, are welcome! Here is the link: https://youtu.be/PzzTYhABJB4
To 5th grade families, at 10:30 A.M. students will transition to class Zoom meetings for the virtual name calling and certificates. Enjoy these special moments and make sure to not blink! Before you know it, you will be attending a middle school promotion celebration!
While Team LGUSD continues to work on a plan for reopening school in August, I look forward to our continued partnership to provide a balanced education for ALL students. More information will be forthcoming in weeks to come. In closing, I have to say that there is no greater community than ours. Our 2019-20 school year was one for the books! May your summer be full of joyful moments with those you love most.

From our families to yours, we would like to wish you all a very happy and healthy summer! Although our school year didn't end quite the way any of us expected, we are beyond proud of our Daves Community & can't wait to see you all again soon.

Thanks so much for all the wonderful submissions for the virtual science fair! We had submissions from many different grades on many different subjects. Enjoy them all  HERE !
Many grew attached to the wishtree built in the library for Authors' Day 2019. Its original materials were not strong enough to last.

Somy Hwang created a way to remake our wishtree for the ages. Prior wishes have been moved to a binder nearby. Students looked forward all year to adding new wishes. Somy finished recreating the tree in early March, just before book fair and our shelter in place.

If students wish to send me their wishes (especially our graduating 5th graders), I will put them up when we are allowed back at school. If they are emailed , I will trim them and add them to the tree.
Somy Hwang , left, remade our beautiful tree so it can last a long long time. Her daughter, Hannah Kang, graduates this year.

Jane Mairose , right, volunteers every Tuesday and Friday in the library almost all day. She is one of many quiet forces that helps make the library go.

These two are shy enough (and life at Daves busy enough) that introducing them is rarely effective… everyone must speed off to the next thing, and they return to being indispensable, and mostly avoiding photos. I asked for and got permission from both to use this rare photo of them together, taken the day Somy completed our wishtree.

Thank you to all of the volunteers that make Daves the place that it is.
