PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Daves Avenue Families,

I hope you enjoyed the long weekend with those you care about most. Today was a special day on campus as we had our first Wednesday Wave Assembly of the 2018-19 school year. To maximize instructional minutes for core academic areas, the staff at Daves has committed to focus on providing a quality assembly on the first Wednesday of every month. The theme this month is confidence and we would love for you to reinforce concepts at home in the month of September. Remember, self confidence comes from a sense of competence. Please consider celebrating achievements, both small and large. While encouraging words from trusted adults on campus are valuable, the praise provided to a child by a parent helps students thrive across settings. Here are some suggestions and conversation starters for you at home:

  1. Love your child. Of course, this might not always look perfect and that’s understandable. If a child feels loved and accepted at home, research states that children will be better equipped to extend to other groups during unstructured time at school and during athletic activities.
  2. Praise. Positive feedback and reinforcement goes a long way in the classroom and at home. Failure is inevitable, and students need to know that it is acceptable to not be perfect.
  3. Model self-love and positive talk.  Take the time to celebrate your successes with your children. If your child hears you talking about your skills and talents, they will likely follow in your footsteps.
  4. Help your child set realistic goals. While we all want our children to succeed academically, be cautious of time and pressures that are often presented as a result of extra-curricular activities. If students feel like they need to become an Olympic athlete to please you, it is likely time to have a family discussion about reasonable goals to avoid feelings of failure.
  5. Teach Resilience! Failures, setbacks, and criticism are a natural part of the learning process. These occurrences are simply hurdles and you can help your child by encouraging them to “try again”. Validating a child’s feelings is important, and you can help teach that setbacks are a normal part of life.

Next week I will provide additional strategies on how to help bolster your child’s self-confidence.

Are you or your child interested in joining the Daves Ave Green Team?

The student Green Team meets Tuesdays in the Daves Avenue Garden of Wisdom immediately after school until 3:30 pm. Students get a t-shirt and build friendships while learning to become stewards of the environment. Activities include maintaining the native & sensory garden, conducting science experiments, activism and learning about eco issues in our immediate world, and doing “green” projects around the school. We have had outside speakers, we might get a worm bin, we are building things - it is great! This year we will focus on the impact of plastics in the ocean.   Click here to learn more and join us!
