THE BAMA BULLETIN

THE MANUFACTURING NEWS

2023 Florida Manufacturing Report

Working with the Department, FloridaMakes had the opportunity to compile the initial draft under their direction and review. This report was the culmination of several months of effort, led principally by Zoraida Velasco and Mike Aller, with significant network staff support in the research, development, and drafting phases of the effort. As well, the Florida Commerce Workforce Statistics and Economics Research team, led by Jimmy Heckman, contributed significantly to the research, analysis, and shaping of the overall structure of the report. In mid-November, the draft was delivered to the Secretary for review, input, and editing. The report highlights the impactful work the stakeholders in our manufacturing ecosystem collectively undertake to support and elevate the manufacturing economy in Florida.

As you dive into the 2023 Florida Manufacturing Report, know that it was our hope in drafting that the readers – policymakers, industry leaders, and citizens alike -- will gain a more comprehensive understanding of the importance of manufacturing to our economy and the role it will continue to play in advancing our standard of living. Further, we hope that those same policymakers, industry leaders, and citizens all gain a better appreciation for including “manufacturing” as an integral part of Florida’s brand identity.

We believe this report has the potential to make a significant impact on our initiatives to elevate manufacturing in Florida. We hope you will find valuable insights into key trends, challenges, and opportunities within the manufacturing landscape. Further, we believe that this document will not only serve as a valuable resource for our internal teams but also as a powerful tool for us to leverage in advocating for the growth and success of manufacturing in our state.

Florida Manufacturing Days 2024

Members of the Florida Manufacturing & Supply Chain Advocacy Council participate annually in the Florida Manufacturing Days in Tallahassee and Hill Day in Washington, D.C. The purpose of these events is for manufacturers to meet with their legislators to discuss and advocate for manufacturing related issues. They are great opportunities to network with legislators, colleagues and peers, and to learn more about the legislative process.

In January 2023, the Council celebrated Florida Manufacturing Days in Tallahassee with a delegation of nearly 50 manufacturing stakeholders. During event, attendees met with over 60 legislators. In March 2023, members of the Council traveled to Washington, D.C. for Hill Day to meet with Florida's congressional offices to highlight the importance of the MEP program to providing vital technology-based services to small- and medium-sized manufacturers. Delegates met with 16 Florida legislators, including both Senate offices.

Participation in Florida Manufacturing Days is exclusive for members of the Council. Joining is free, please contact events@floridamakes.com for more information.

What do you like most about being a BAMA member? BAMA has so many great things to offer, but I love that they invest in our youth through scholarship programs to help the future of manufacturing and fabricating needs in the Tampa Bay Area.

Tell us about your company? Smith Metal Source was started in 2001 by Bill Smith, Sr., and Bob Smith. We are a metals distribution center carrying stainless, carbon, and aluminum flat rolled and long products. The company has grown over the last 23 years, but the focus will always remain the same. REFER A MEMBER

Do you know a leader in manufacturing who could benefit by being part of our association? Membership in a manufacturing association offers so many benefits and will keep members knowledgeable about important, ever-changing issues, trends, and legislation within the industry. The most popular benefit our members rave about is our networking events and tours at local manufacturing facilities. The best part is, over 70% of the attendance at these events is made up of other manufacturers who share best practices and strategies that are working for them.
