YURT Ribbon Cutting at Monarch Montessori

Monarch Montessori recently celebrated a special milestone as the school unveiled a brand-new yurt, thanks to the determination of four courageous elementary students who passionately advocated for this addition.

Back in May, these students made a compelling case to the Denver City Council for funding to build the yurt, which will serve as a music classroom and a space for younger children. Their advocacy faced challenges, but their resilience and dedication shone through.

The yurt now stands as a powerful symbol of their perseverance and the support of the community. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this new space will have on Monarch Montessori’s students for years to come.

Tip of the Month:

Put your Garden to Bed

With fall just around the corner, it’s time to start planning how to put your garden to bed for the season! These steps will help ensure your garden is prepared for winter.

  • Start by removing all annual plants from the garden. If you plan to plant a cover crop, pull the plants out by the roots and shake excess soil back into the bed. If you won’t plant a winter crop, simply cut annual plants at the base, leaving the roots in the soil. The roots will hold the soil in place and prevent it from washing away.
  • Next, add a few inches of compost or organic matter to the garden. Adding compost in the fall allows it to break down even more, so that soil is rich and ready to plant in the spring!
  • On top of the organic matter, add a layer of mulch about 2 inches thick. This can consist of straw, leaves, grass clippings, etc. Mulching helps to regulate soil temperature and retain the nutrients from the compost.
  • As the weather gets colder, shut off all outdoor irrigation and drain all the water out.

Event Recap: Montbello 2020 Back to School giveaway

The Montbello 2020, RNO Health, Wellness, Back to School/Backpack Community Event began in August 2017 at the Montbello Recreation Center. Initially, the event offered 100 backpacks, school supplies, free food, raffles, and health resources. As the event grew, we faced challenges during COVID, including traffic issues at our temporary Walmart location. Despite this, we managed to provide 1,000 backpacks, food, and COVID-related resources.

On August 10th, 2024, Montbello 2020, RNO hosted its 8th Annual Health, Wellness, Back to School/Backpack Giveaway Community Event at Lincoln Tech, Denver Campus. Over 1,000 residents attended, receiving free health screenings, COVID boosters, and vaccinations. Thanks to Ms. Hash's generous offer, Montbello 2020 distributed 2,250 backpacks filled with school supplies, 250 food boxes, and bags of fruit! Attendees also enjoyed free food and entertainment, with five bicycles and gift cards raffled off. Additionally, we presented ten Community Service and Social Responsibility Awards to individuals and organizations, like Montbello Organizing Committee, for making a positive impact in Montbello and the Far Northeast.
