The Roslyn School District participated in Autism Awareness Month this past April with events, concerts, and the wearing of blue on Fridays! Singer-songwriter Brady Rymer put on three fun performances for the children at Heights School.
All three Roslyn Elementary Schools—Heights, East Hills and Harbor Hill—welcomed parents back into their buildings for group tours in March and April. Parents were thrilled for a chance to see the library, cafeteria, and special area rooms. For some, it was the first opportunity to see the inside of their children’s schools since the pandemic began.

HEIGHTS SCHOOL
As part of Nutrition Month at Heights, a section of the cafeteria was turned into a grocery store to teach young students about different food groups and to explain how food is brought to stores from farms in the United States and around the world.
To kick off the week, Principal Mary Wood put together a video presentation that showed her at Ferreira Foodtown, where she interviewed different workers and captured a behind the scenes look at the inner workings of the supermarket.Text Link
In advance of Earth Day, 4th and 5th grade students at Harbor Hill took recycling to a whole new level. Under the direction of music teacher Ms. Dorothy Burns, they created real instruments out of recycled materials. Students began by designing a blueprint of the instrument, then gathered all the materials needed to build it. Many instruments were made, including drum sets, guitars, flutes, and more!
ROSLYN MIDDLE SCHOOL
In honor of Earth Day, several students at Roslyn Middle School installed donated plants near the flag pole. Local nurseries also donated seed packets to be distributed to all the children.
ROSLYN HIGH SCHOOL
Roslyn High School students traveled to Stony Brook University to participate in Barcode Long Island. Alongside Dr. Maureen Murphy of SBU, students visited a nature preserve and Hidden Pond Park to collect lichens, then prepared samples for storage and DNA extraction.
BIG FISH
Roslyn High School’s Royal Crown Players performed Big Fish, live on stage for the Roslyn school community. The musical is based on the novel Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions by Daniel Wallace, later adapted to film by Director Tim Burton. Click here for photos from the show.
Roslyn High School senior Hailee Youn has been named a 2022 U.S. Presidential Scholars Semifinalist. She is among 620 semifinalists who were selected from a pool of over 5,000 candidates. The Commission on U.S. Presidential Scholars is now in the process of completing its selection of the high school seniors who will be named 2022 U.S. Presidential Scholars. The Commission's choices will be announced in mid-May by the U.S. Secretary of Education, Dr. Miguel Cardona.
