ROSLYN SCHOOL DISTRICT CELEBRATES
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Students at Heights School learned about Black history with an interactive challenge called the Black History Month Scavenger Game. Each day, classroom teachers received three envelopes with clues about a celebrated Black American. After the name of the person was revealed, classes searched for a photo of that person in the hallways. Next to each photo was a QR code, which the teacher scanned to access a video about the person to show students when they returned to their classroom.

Students in Mrs. Ross’ third-grade class at East Hills participated in a Black History Month lesson where they researched significant figures in Black history, then created mini-biography books and designed stamps to illustrate their chosen historical figure.
Students in Mrs. Goldin's second grade class at Harbor Hill used the platform PebbleGo to research historical figures for Black History Month. They turned their research into a poster representing the facts and aspects of their figure's life and included a famous quote. The posters were displayed on the wall so the students could participate in a “gallery walk” to admire each other’s work.

PARP WEEK IN ROSLYN SCHOOLS
In association with the PFA (Parent Faculty Association), East Hills and Harbor Hill elementary schools hosted PARP Week (Pick a Reading Partner) from February 7th - 11th. For both schools, it was a fun-filled week of activities centered around the joy of reading.
The theme at East Hills was Go for the Gold, with reading activities and dress-up days. Harbor Hill’s theme was the Reading Olympics. Children logged their minutes into a reading log and the top “Olympic Medal Readers” were rewarded with prizes at the end of the week.
On Wednesday, February 9, 2022, East Hills hosted Guest Reader Day, with over two dozen administrators from across the District visiting classrooms to read aloud Salt in His Shoes, a book about Michael Jordan’s path to success. Students in Ms. D’Elia’s 5th grade class were happily surprised to see Superintendent Allison Brown walk through their door. Harbor Hill plans to host their Guest Reader Day in coordination with National Read Across America Day— to be held on Wednesday, March 2, 2022.

Students and staff at Roslyn Middle School were delighted to see a delayed group art project go on display in the cafeteria. The art is a reflection of the work of famous black artists Jean Michelle Basquiat, Mickalene Thomas, and Corey Barksdale.
“The new artwork is not only lively and visually dynamic, but it also mirrors the ever changing population in Roslyn’s community,” said Studio Art teacher Terrie Lorge. “It is encouraging for the students to see proud and beautiful black models adorning the walls of the cafeteria. It’s especially impactful for them to know that the artwork was created in collaboration by fellow students.”
