BLACK HISTORY MONTH

During the month of February, elementary students across the Roslyn School District learned about the stories and achievements of African Americans. |
|
At Heights, students took part in an interactive challenge called the Black History Month Scavenger Game. Each day, classroom teachers received three envelopes with clues about a celebrated Black American. After the name of the person was revealed, the class searched for a photo of that person in the halls. |
|
East Hills Elementary School held a school wide event to celebrate Black History Month and highlighted African American individuals twice each week. Fifth graders created murals and all classes read the The Oldest Student about a woman named Mary Walker who was born into slavery and learned to read at age 116.
|

Harbor Hill Elementary School hosted different Black History Month lessons for every grade. Ms. Hendler’s class learned the story of Ruby Bridges, while Ms. Denig’s class enjoyed a class read-aloud of Mae Among the Stars.

Roslyn Middle School shared daily videos and posts during first period to teach students about figures in Black history who have made a positive impact on the world. |

Katie Duffy-Schumacher, Founder and President of Don't Press Send, Inc. visited East Hills Elementary School to host an assembly for 3rd and 4th grade students.
|
|
|
Six 5th grade students at East Hills Elementary School brainstormed an idea to honor the teachers and staff at their school. They created a box and placed it in the main office for students to nominate people they wished to recognize. Each week, the selected honorees are featured on the morning announcements and receive a STAR pin and handwritten thank you note. Security guards Mike Teneriello and Joe Gragano were among the first group to receive the honor.

HARBOR HILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL |

Harbor Hill celebrated the 100th day of school on February 9, 2023. Many students and staff dressed in "one-hundred year old" costumes. The fifth grade also observed their one-thousandth day of school as students at Harbor Hill.
|
|
The 4th and 5th grade robotics students at Harbor Hill Elementary School spent ten weeks working in teams to design, build, and code their very own robotic cat! They even coded their cat to do all sorts of different activities such as sing happy birthday, play the harmonica, and even walk like a real cat.

The Roslyn Middle School Spotlight Drama Club will perform Aladdin Thursday, March 2nd at 4pm, Friday, March 3rd at 7:30pm and Saturday, March 4th at 7:30pm. Tickets are $10, and can be purchased at the door or by emailing dburns@roslynschools.org.

On Saturday, February 4, 2023, Roslyn High School took second place in the annual Long Island High School Ethics Bowl at Hofstra University. The ethics bowl is a competitive yet collaborative event in which students analyze and discuss real-life, and timely, ethical issues.

Roslyn High School students Zachary Davidson and Justin Margulies were selected for the Sixth Annual NYIT Mini-Research Grant Award in the amount of $300 for their research proposal, “Effects of Gyro Stabilization on Hand Steadiness and Dexterity.” The Grant Review committee determined their submission to have scientific merit and potential impact in the STEM fields.

Congratulations to the 173 students who were inducted into the National Honor Society on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. Selection into the National Honor Society is based on fidelity to the four tenants of the society: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. All students must have a 90 or above unweighted average to be admitted.

Congratulations to freshman gymnast Riley Green who placed 4th on the uneven bars at the Individual County Championships and State Qualifier on Tuesday, February 14, 2023. Riley will represent Nassau County at the New York State Gymnastics meet on March 4, 2023 in Buffalo. The gymnastics team is coached by Stephanie Orfini and Lauren Ruppert.

Congratulations to sophomore Zach Davidson and senior Ben Veneziano who both qualified to compete at the New York State Indoor Championship track and field meet. Zach cleared 11’6 in the pole vault and Ben cleared 6 feet in the high jump, coming in the top two in their events in all of Section VIII. The meet will take place on March 4, 2023 at the Ocean Breeze Athletic complex in Staten Island, NY. The winter track and field team is coached by Kristen Hamilton and Nick Chiarelli.
