Over the past 75 years, the nation's view of psychedelics has shifted from potentially helpful psychotherapeutic substance (1950s) to Schedule I drug (1970) and now back to psychotherapeutic substance. In fact, Dr. Mark Gold writes in Psychology Today that psilocybin may be the best medical treatment for cocaine use disorders. Another non-traditional substance, ketamine, was found in a meta-analysis to quickly and effectively reduce depressive symptoms in those with major depressive disorder. The movement to use non-traditional drugs therapeutically is now backed up with both science and momentum. Yet, psychedelics are not for everyone. Some patients experience positive results, but others may deteriorate after psychedelic treatment.
In this newsletter, we also feature an important ASAM update on treating adolescents with SUD as well as an article concerning two parallel trends: a decrease in fatal drug overdoses nationwide and the appearance of powerful synthetic substances.

RESEARCH AND NEW REPORTS
The White House 2026 National Drug Control Strategy came out last week. View it here. In JAMA Network, authors focus on the importance of stable housing for those in recovery. Drug and Alcohol Dependence features a paper on opioid use disorder treatment in older adults, while a paper on the effects of psychedelics on brain circuit functioning can be found in Nature Medicine. Also highlighted this week is a report in the British Medical Journal which discusses the safety of prenatal buprenorphine and methadone use, while a paper in Nature reports on the discovery of a powerful opioid with minimal adverse effects.
