"I’m proud to serve on the host committee with so many distinguished men and women who believed in the work of John Lewis, and his wife Lillian."

-President Rey
International President, Honorable Bro. Chris V. Rey, J.D. is serving on the committee planning the newly established John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation Gala. The event will be held Tuesday May 17, 2022, in Washington D.C. at the Schuyler Ballroom in the Hamilton Hotel.

The Atlanta-based Foundation was conceived by Congressman Lewis before his passing in 2020 to carry on his and his beloved wife’s passion for purposeful living and civic engagement. The Lewises spent their lives praying and moving their feet as they fought for justice, fairness and inclusion through non-violent means. The work of the foundation will ensure that future generations have the tools and support to create their own Good Trouble.

“Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity will play a critical role in this inaugural gala honoring our brother," said President Rey, who also said he is honored to be a part of the historic event. "I’m proud to serve on the host committee with so many distinguished men and women who believed in the work of John Lewis, and his wife Lillian. His legacy will always be tied to our fraternity, because Sigma men will always find a way to get into GOOD TROUBLE.”

Honorable Brother John Lewis, who passed away in July 2020, was a trailblazer in the civil rights movement. He became a member of the fraternity’s Distinguished Service Chapter, the highest level of recognition in the Fraternity, in 2017.

The gala will be a collective moment of reflection on the life and legacy of the civil rights icon and raise critical funds necessary to underwrite initiatives that further the values John and Lillian Lewis lived.

Event co-chairs include their son, John-Miles Lewis. “There could be no better celebration of my father’s birthday than today’s announcement of The John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation,” he said. “When my dad thought of this Foundation, it was his vision that it would support good work, inspire good troublemaking and do its part to make the world a better place.”
Gala Co-chairs
Event co-chairs also include Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights President, Kerry Kennedy, Georgia Power Chairman, President and CEO, Chris Womack, Award-winning Actress and Activist Alfre Woodard, as well as Home Depot Co-Founder, Arthur M. Blank and Microsoft Corporate Vice President of US Government Affairs, Fred Humphries.

Brother Fred Spencer of Tampa Florida is on a mission. He wants to erase bullying one athlete at a time. A former pro basketball player, he has penned a new book called “Anti-Bullying Through Sports.”

“The book was about ten plus years in the making," he said. His hope is to reach athletes and encourage them to use their platforms to encourage other students, not tear them down.

“People don’t realize, we’re built for this. As an athlete, for example I am on the basketball court... coach always says take what the defense gives you. Now I'm taking that same concept out into the community."

Bro. Spencer, who became a member of our wondrous band in 1995 at Troy (Alabama) University’s Alpha Alpha Lambda Chapter, said the fraternity made an impression on him early, teaching him the value of community service. “It hit home to me how they were giving back.”

He knows firsthand the damage bullying can do. When he was younger, he struggled with a learning disorder that subjected him to ridicule from his peers. He wants to help others, so they don’t have to endure what he did.

Brother Spencer’s book will be released in May and will be available for purchase on Amazon.
