A 3 Step Thought Process Towards a Meaningful Shavuot

Ask the person next to you in shul “do you believe in Hashem?”, to which they’d presumably reply “yes”. “Do you believe in the infinite value of Torah and Mitzvot?” again, the reply would be “yes”. “So why don’t you spend every possible moment of your day investing in the infinite?”

Don’t actually do this - but isn’t the logic compelling? Yet, the simple answer is that, while we know Torah and mitzvot are what we ought to invest our time in, there are so many other thoughts, activities and conversations that are more appealing. It’s a challenge!

While it is true that, to our conscious mind, Torah and mitzvot might not be as appealing as other stimuli, our Neshama has an entirely different experience. In fact, the Ohr HaChaim Hakodosh tells us that if our conscious mind could sense the utter enjoyment our Neshama experiences when we learn Torah, we would literally go crazy for Torah!

The Kabbalists tell us that the 48 hours of the holiday of Shavuot are our opportunity to bridge that tragic gap. Our relationship with the Torah; our understanding, appreciation and enjoyment in what we study is, in a significant way, determined on the Yom Tov of Shavuot.

Hashem should bless us all with the ability and determination to utilize the opportunities over Shavuot (both night time and day!) to deepen our connection to Hashem and His Torah and, in turn, appreciate the true sweetness of Torah for years to come.
