Shabbat Shalom D'var Torah

by Rabbi Yitzchak Barer, Upper School Judaic Studies Teacher

This week’s parsha begins with a message from Moshe Rabbeinu to all of Klal Yisrael. Moshe is sharing his last few parting messages with us, the Jewish nation before he passes on to the next world. He begins this particular message with “אַתֶּ֨ם נִצָּבִ֤ים הַיּוֹם֙ כֻּלְּכֶ֔ם “ - “you are all standing here this day” . Why does Moshe state the obvious? If everyone was there listening to Moshe of course they were standing there that day? Also, what message, thousands of years later, are we meant to take from this? We were not standing there that day?

Rav Hirsch explains that the answer lies in the unique word that Moshe chose to address the nation with. The word that Moshe used was not the classic Hebrew word for standing which is “עוֹמֵד but rather the word Moshe uses is נִצָב. Rav Hirsh explains that this word implies not only standing, but standing in the face of challenges. Moshe is telling us that when he passes on and is no longer there, we as a nation always will be imbued with the ability and strength to face whatever challenges we face. The message was that no matter what situation we find ourselves in, we are given the ability to weather the challenges and continue as a nation. The Jews were faced with the uncertainty of losing Moshe as a leader, yet Moshe encourages them that no matter what life throws at us on a national level or on a personal level we will always be able to withstand and continue thriving.

May we all merit to internalize this ability to grow in the face of adversity on both a national and personal level!

Have a great Shabbos!

Rabbi Barer
