Shabbat Shalom

by Nechama Fried, 6th Grade Judaic Studies Teacher

“I am STARVING!!!”

“I am such an IDIOT!”

“That food tastes DISGUSTING!”

In Parshat Noach, Hashem commands Noach to take 2 of each non-nosher animal and 7 of each kosher animal onto the Teiva, the Ark. Hashem says, “וּמִן־הַבְּהֵמָ֡ה אֲ֠שֶׁ֠ר לֹ֣א טְהֹרָ֥ה הִ֛וא שְׁנַ֖יִם,” and “Take 2 of the animals that are not pure.” Why does Hashem call the non-Kosher animals “not pure” instead of calling them “impure”?

The Torah is teaching us the importance of using refined language. In addition to avoiding Lashon Harah (gossip) and Ona’at Devarim (hurtful words), we are taught to speak in a refined, polite way befitting Hashem’s chosen nation. Instead of saying, “Impure,” we say, “not pure.” Instead of saying, “I am STARVING!” we say, “I am hungry.” Instead of saying, “I am an IDIOT,” we say, “I didn’t understand that.” In today’s world, when the society around us encourages people to say whatever they want, we strive for a higher standard of speech and communication.

Life & Legacy
CTA is a member of the JewishColumbus Life & Legacy cohort. The Life & Legacy Initiative is a partnership of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and JewishColumbus that promotes after-lifetime giving to benefit local Jewish agencies, day schools, and synagogues. Since 2012, LIFE & LEGACY has raised $960 million in new planned gifts in Jewish communities across North America.

Over the next four years, CTA along with 17 other local Jewish organizations will receive training, coaching, and incentives to raise awareness of the importance of planned giving.  Expect to see more information in the next few months about the Life & Legacy Initiative and how you can make your planned gift to CTA.

Questions about Life & Legacy can be directed to Rabbi Drandoff, Shari Herszage or Board President, Raanan Lefkovitz.
