THE FILIBUSTER IS A CLUSTER |
|
The path to saving our democracy is clear. Registering Democrats in swing states is key, but equally urgent is ending the filibuster. Here’s why.
We must pass H.R. 1, the For the People Act – and H.R. 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. H.R. 1 makes automatic voter registration the law of the land in every state, extends early voting, and ensures vote-by-mail in every state. H.R. 4 restores and modernizes the protections of the Voting Rights Act, the crown jewel of civil rights legislation that protected the voting rights of minorities from 1965 until 2013, when the Roberts Supreme Court gutted it.
At this moment, Republican-controlled legislatures in swing states across the country are hard at work passing extreme restrictions on voting rights. So far 33 states have proposed 165 bills to limit our freedom to vote.
There is also danger at a higher level. Congressional redistricting happens this year, and each state controls its own process, meaning states run by Republicans are free to draw gerrymandered maps to further tilt the playing field towards them.
H.R. 1 and H.R. 4 level the playing field, providing federal protections against racist, classist voter suppression and redistricting. With them, we have a shot at averting disaster, and keeping the Senate and House out of Republican hands in two years. Without them, we do not.
To pass these laws, we must get rid of the filibuster – either partially or fully. That would allow us to pass laws with the 50 Democrats in the Senate and Vice President Harris breaking the ties. Which is necessary, since we'll never get 10 Republicans to join us.
The filibuster is a non-constitutional Senate rule used by segregationists to prevent majority rule. Right now, the filibuster allows senators representing only 12% of Americans to control the laws while disabling the senators that represent the other 88% of Americans. That is the definition of anti-democratic.
Now is the time to pressure your senators, especially if you live in California, Arizona, or West Virginia. Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), and Joe Manchin (D-WV) are publicly opposed to ending the filibuster. Call them once a day, every day! Every call helps. Leave a message with your name and zip code (so they know you’re a constituent) and urge them to end the filibuster in order to pass H.R. 1 and 4 and literally save democracy. These calls are tallied and reported to the senators, so they make a huge difference.
