KOAA, 9/11/2017

Firefighters from across the country and Canada will make their way into Colorado Springs later this week for the International Association of Fire Fighters Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial.

It's happening in Memorial Park on Saturday morning where hundreds will pay tribute to those that have made the ultimate sacrifice but it might be missing a few key players because of Hurricane Irma.

FIREOPS 101 EVENT SHOWS GRIT OF FIREFIGHTERS
NBC24, 9/8/2017

Smashing windows, dragging bodies, and stopping fires.

All in a days work for firefighters, but what makes them do such a dangerous job?

"I don't think the average person realizes the fire department does so much more than put out fires. Dealing with family tragedies, the emotional state that we're in on all kinds of runs," said Brian Phillips with the Toledo Fire Department.

FireOps 101 was an event held Friday by the Toledo Fire Department in conjunction with Sylvania Township, Maumee and City of Perrysburg fire departments to help show the tough aspects of the job to the public.   READ MORE

SIX BURNING QUESTIONS ABOUT CENTRAL CALIFORNIA'S 2017 FIRE SEASON
FRESNO BEE, 9/10/2017

No, it's not your imagination. California's long, hot summer is on a pace to produce a wildfire season with more fires scorching more acres this year than 2016 - more acres falling victim to flames, in fact, than all but three of the past 10 years.

How many fires? How many acres? Why are there more? In a prolific fire season following a wet winter that many people thought was supposed to end California's drought, you've got burning questions. We've got some answers.   READ MORE

Most fire fighters and paramedics are exposed to potentially traumatic events as a normal part of their jobs. Following certain bad calls, some may have a strong reaction. They replay the event in their minds, have difficulty sleeping or experience strong, upsetting thoughts and feelings.

By talking with others and engaging in self-care, these common stress reactions often subside over time. However, when these symptoms persist or intensify, or there's a delayed stress reaction months or years after an event, the fire fighter or paramedic could be experiencing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a diagnosable and treatable mental health condition.

Help is possible, but only if fire fighters and paramedics recognize the signs of this condition and talk about them.

Fortunately, the stigma associated with PTSD is fading. The worry about being perceived as "weak" is giving way to a growing concern about untreated PTSD and suicide. Fire fighters and paramedics with PTSD are finally coming out of the shadows, talking about their PTSD experience and getting help.

So, as a fire fighter, paramedic, family member or friend, what can you do?
