Israel Kamakawiwoʻole
Israel, affectionately known as “Bruddah Iz” or simply “Iz,” was born in 1959 in Honolulu, Hawaii, and became one of the most iconic figures in Hawaiian music. Known for his gentle voice and masterful ukulele playing, Iz gained international fame with his medley of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World.” This song, featured in numerous films, commercials, and television shows, showcased his unique blend of traditional Hawaiian music with contemporary influences.
Iz was not only a musician but also a passionate advocate for Hawaiian rights and culture, often using his music to express his love for his homeland. Despite his struggles with obesity, which led to his untimely death in 1997, Iz’s legacy continues to inspire millions around the world. His music remains a symbol of Hawaiian culture and the spirit of aloha. Watch the video and you'll see!
