Bits and Pieces

June 17, 2025

In case you hadn’t noticed, the heat is on! Thank goodness for air conditioning, swamp coolers and the like to keep us comfortable; I was fortunate to grow up in Missouri with air conditioning and a swimming pool so even the terrible humidity there didn’t seem to bother me much. But when the monsoons come here, oh, boy, the humidity definitely bothers me and everyone else! And I’ve been told to be prepared this year, because the prediction is for a big monsoon season. Get your sewing machine in shape, grab your fabrics and projects, and have fun doing what you love. If you want company/companionship while you sew, come join us here in our classroom. We have deliberately kept the summer schedule of classes light, so check the calendar or give us a call to see if the classroom is open for you and a few friends. Lunch places are here in our center, we have a fridge for you to use, and of course, we can always tempt you with fabric. It’s coming in fast and furious right now, so there are many pieces from which to choose. You won’t even notice any humidity or heat outside! Promise.

We will have Pajama Mamas this Friday, starting at 5 pm, so you can always join that group for a little evening retreat. Then stay on (actually, come back on Sunday at noon) for another fun class of Kime Komi…everyone is loving this class, and Shelby keeps coming up with new inspirations for you! Sign up, get your supply list, come to the class, and go home with a finished project that does not involve a sewing machine. Shelby has made quite a few samples to inspire, and they all draw positive accolades from you guys. A great use for your scrap fabrics, right?!?!

Lynn and I are getting things together for later in the month, to trek to Salt Lake City for BU 2025! Of course, we plan a stop at Grace Co. on the way, and Riley Blake Fabrics has invited us to tour their new warehouse nearby. And then we’re involved in classes, lectures, seminars, hands-on classes and more at BU. We will find out early on what the new machines will be rolling out, what the new notions will be, all the newest coming our way from Switzerland and BERNINA. At this point, we know nothing. At least last year, we all anticipated a new machine, but had no idea just how new and fabulous the B 990 would be! This year will be interesting, as they all are, and I believe I can safely say that the B 990 will remain the top of the line machine, but anything after that is just pure guesswork.

Do anticipate that the next newsletter will be brief, since we will be getting ready to hit the road. BU this year begins on Friday and continues through Monday. We have already signed up for the classes that we’ll be taking, and trust me, they offer plenty of them. Our day starts about 8-ish, and continue through 5, and then we have vendor markets and the BERNINA Store to shop in, eat, then try to get some sleep before repeating the same style of day. Fun, but usually exhausting! We (AKA Lynn) will try to send pictures out to you as our days progress; stay tuned daily for the latest and greatest that you will soon find in SVQ. And before you know it, we’re into July! Go figure!

For our special fabric of the week, since the 4th of July is approaching, I choose PATRIOTIC FABRICS for your weekly special, at 20% off when you give us the code: USA20. We have some great patriotic panels, fabrics, even a kit or two. Just give us USA20 and get 20% off those special fabrics. I have two that I put up on my doors for those holidays. And by the way, we will be closed for the 4th, as usual. In addition to patriotic panels, check out the 3 Yard Quilt books for ideas: we did a sample of one, and it’s on the left wall as you enter the shop. It uses a great modern-style plaid which I dearly love! And while most of our patriotics are in the last room of the shop, look on the shelves in the first room, left hand shelves, for the newest that have come in. As a matter of fact, those fabrics are in close proximity to the patriotic kit as well as the 3 yard quilt on the wall. Lots for you to check out!

That’s all my news for now…stay cool, come in to sew or visit, drink lots of water and such, and enjoy each day, hot or not!!! Again, thank you to all who attended our 15 year celebration. Let’s just plan on doing that all again, alright?!?!
