Students participate, learn and taste in Apple Crunch Off 🍎
SPS elementary students joined millions of other students in tasting and learning about apples as part of National Farm to School Month.
“Teaching our students to purchase locally grown produce supports local farmers, creates jobs, diversifies the economy, reduces food insecurity and attracts reinvestment and growth by keeping food dollars in our local economy,” said Kendall Slaughter, Farm to School specialist. "By reducing the distance produce has to travel to the consumer, produce can be harvested closer to true ripeness, which many students have never had the opportunity to taste. A peach harvested at peak ripeness from Central High School tastes undeniably sweeter, juicier and more flavorful than those shipped from California.”

Three athletic facilities renamed to honor exceptional SPS coaches
Glendale, Kickapoo and Parkview high schools will each rename an athletic facility this school year.
"Coach Price was held in high regard by students, staff and the community throughout his 24 seasons as Glendale's head coach. Even with his longevity on our sidelines and his record as the winningest football coach in SPS history, Coach Price never lost perspective of education-based athletics. It is with great pleasure that we will name our Glendale High School football field after this extraordinary coach."

Athletic Director at SPS

My SPS Story: Heidi Hardy, secretary at Bowerman Elementary School
"In the fall of 1979, I started kindergarten at Weller Elementary. I attended there through sixth grade, then moved up to Pipkin Junior High for my seventh and eighth grade years. I then graduated from Central High School in 1992, after being very involved in sports, Kilties, and orchestra. Later, as a mother of two, even my children all received their K-12 education from SPS. I started my career with SPS in January 2006, as a library clerical. After three years, I took on the role of assistant principals' secretary at my alma mater, CHS. After dedicating 14 years there, I just recently accepted the Bowerman Elementary secretary position.
Last year, Dr. Lathan’s theme of “Keep On Growing” kept resonating in my mind and throughout all things social media. Even sermons from my pastor challenged us to not stop pursuing growth. One day in November, I came across a motivational newsletter that had this amazing statement about change in it, and I immediately knew it was time to leave CHS, where I loved serving my alma mater, but I finally felt ready to grow! So I started applying at other places. Some within SPS and some outside of what I was used to.
I have resided in the Bowerman neighborhood for 21 years. Once I saw my own neighborhood community could use my resources, I applied. These are my people. The secretary there was retiring after 24 years in the building! Her timing to let go was my timing to bloom where planted.
The Bowerman community and its incredible people have truly been stars. Welcoming me so kindly and graciously, being patient as I learn how to enroll, schedule, budget, take attendance and more. Even though it brings challenges, I am up for the challenge and know I will LOVE IT here! And I’ve truly enjoyed being able to walk to work and back home.
This isn’t just my job, this is my home."
